For UAD v9 Thunderbolt configurations please see this thread - http://uadforum.com/apollo-interfac...-thunderbolt-setups-windows-uad-v9-later.html

PLEASE NOTE: This is an unsupported configuration. Try at your own risk.

Requirements:

‣ ORIGINAL Apollo (Silver Face). Apollo Twin (Thunderbolt) and Black Face Apollos do NOT work with Windows currently.

‣ ORIGINAL Thunderbolt Card.
This is due to the new Thunderbolt cards supporting Thunderbolt 2.0 technology. There is no current UA support for Thunderbolt 2.0 on Windows systems for reasons related to Microsoft pushing no standard for the 2.0 protocol.

‣ Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 with UAD FireWire Software Version up through 8.3 (workarounds for 8.4 and 8.5 may exist)

Migo posted one confirmed working setup so far (out of the box, so to speak) - Many more (and troubleshooting help) in the posts below:

Apollo Quad w/ Thunderbolt card
Mobotherboard - Asus P8Z77-V PRO/THUNDERBOLT
Processor - Intel Core i7 - 2600K @ 3,40GHz
RAM - 16GB DDR3?
OS -Windows 7 64 bit

Apollo Quad w/ Thunderbolt expansion
Asus P8Z77-V Premium
16 GB RAM
i7 3770K
Windows 7 64-bit

So far so good with Thunderbolt.

Re: Apollo Working Thunderbolt Setups on Windows 7

Update [also posted this in the other thread]: I'm getting an issue where sometimes the PC loses the Apollo connection. Audio still plays through it, but the console says "no device" in red up in the righthand corner with a little red light next to it. The Apollo also doesn't show up in the control panel anymore when this happens. I fixed it once by uninstalling in the device manager and rebooting. At some point in the day (while not working on audio stuff), the connection failed. So it's an intermittent problem, and probably a deal breaker. I'll probably go back to firewire, just to keep a stable connection. I may try again after doing a fresh Windows 8 install, just to see what happens.

Hmmm...my connection is stable, so far. I hope in your case it is not an onboard mobo issue.

I tried thunderbolt again after doing a fresh install of Windows 8 64-bit, and had the same connectivity issues. I've reverted back to FW-800, and the connection has been stable. I may revisit thunderbolt if they do a driver update that officially supports it for PC (although that's probably not going to happen any time soon).

I've had my eye on the Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP4 TH. Any caveats to getting it to work properly with the Apollo/Thunderbolt card combo? Plug & play? I imagine you are using the latest UAD v6.5.2 drivers?

Cheers,

No problems yet, Billy. Plug and play, EZ.

Correct on 6.5.2 drivers.

I'd like to update my update: I reverted back to Win 7 from Win 8 (for non-Apollo reasons), and used firewire from the get-go. I decided to try Thunderbolt again, and things were great--until I had to reboot. Upon reboot, the Apollo didn't connect. I then rebooted again, and tried powering off the Apollo until I was completely rebooted. This worked. I left town for a few days, and upon return, the Apollo still had its connection.

One unrelated note: I have noticed that occasionally the audio will get all staticy (this happened on firewire, as well), but it's easily cured by switching the buffer size, and then switching it back. I usually leave the buffer at either 1024 or 2048 by default, but I still get this issue. But like I said, it's quickly solvable, and only happens every once in a while.

I'm a little afraid to reboot again, because of the TB issue, but I'm expecting that if I power down the Apollo first, and then power it back up after reboot, it should probably be OK.

Mike,

I have found that rebooting with the APOLLO turned off and after the system completes it reboot then turn on Apollo.... an APOLLO message comes on the screen indicating communication with APOLLO and in this mode... works everytime for a reboot. I too am using TB on a PC with WIN 8 now.

Billy B... the gigiabyte MOBO didn't work with APOLLO. This is all I can say for ADK built my machine and I promised Scott that I wouldn't tell anybody what hardware he finally got to work. He will build a machine for anyone including the APOLLO at a real GREAT price if you need a new DAW. He gave me a killer price on the Apollo with TB.

Have any PC/TB/Apollo users done the firmware update and moved to UAD V7 yet? I'm just being paranoid here and since my rig is still working great, I am considering sticking with V6.5 (or whatever I'm currently on...) until I get a second Apollo and do the daisy chain action. And before I do that I need to decide if it would be better to sell my Apollo quad and switch to an Apollo 16. Decisions...

Hey guys,
I have now joined the Apollo Thunderbolt on a PC group :)
running:
Intel i7 3770K
Asus p8 z77 Pro Thunderbolt MB
Patriot Viper ram
ATI 5660 pci-e GFX
All running smooth with Windows 7 64bit and the latest UAD Apollo software release
Cheers :)

win 7 64 bit Apollo 16 thunderbolt setup

Hello I Currently have a Apollo 16 linked up to a Intel DZ77RE-75K motherboard using the apple thunderbolt to firewire adapter cable. No problems with the firewire linking up. I have not gotten TB to TB card to link up yet. messing around with manually loading drivers i did see it link for a second so i had a bit of hope.

Would love any suggestions on what i should try to get the TB to link up on this board while its set up up and running.
Also Planning upgrade choices for my other desktop workstation. This one is in my rackmount somewhat portable rig.
Whats is your top on the list for fav known to work thunderbolt to Apollo / Apollo 16 motherboard choices? or just quit messing around and step up to a mac? :)

Apollo 16 / Thunderbolt option card
motherboard Intel DZ77RE-75K
Processor Intel Core i7-3770K Quad-Core Processor 3.5 GHz 8 MB Cache LGA 1155
Memory Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3 1600 MHz
OS Windows 7 64 bit

Thanks George

I'm about to buy the same hardware Syncamorea has.
I was afraid it would not work properly, but it seems everything runs perfect according to him!

What a relief... :D!!!

I have an EVGA Classified 58 motherboard with Intel i7 core processor and 24 gigs RAM. I attached apollo quad through a firewire 800 port. It works great except when I get up to ~40+ plug-ins in my mix I get a warning message on bandwidth and often plug-ins shut down if I do not watch resources. So from this blog it appears we can use thunderbolt to firewire hook-up?
What is the benefit if firewire speed and fireband bandwidth is the bottleneck for data transfer?

I successfully got the Apollo with Thunderbolt to work with a Windows 7 machine the only issue I'm experiencing is when I turn off my Apollo after I'm done with it and go to turn it on again to use it. In order for it to start working again I have to restart my computer. I think it also messes with my USB ports as well because those won't work correctly until I restart as well. Is there a better way to be able to turn the Apollo on and off without having to restart all the time? It's not really an issue to restart all the time, just would like not to if I don't have to. Any help would be great. Thanks

Motherboard ASUS Z87-DELUXE/DUAL
Processor Intel Core i7-4770K Quad-Core Processor 3.5 GHz

I was hoping someone could give me an idea of the plugins instances from FireWire to thunderbolt. How many more plugins can you have in the console while realtime recording? Will thunderbolt be a good investment at present. I have the thunderbolt card, I would just need to update my mother board. Still using FireWire at present... Or, is there a viable PCIe card that would work... thanks
