Neve 88RS MKII

I guess I can always grab the demo, but I'm waiting to see the DSP hit. I don't see it on the instance chart, do you?

I use the legacy 88RS a lot for a lightweight and flexible channel strip & EQ. If I want to go DSP-heavy for character, I have the Vision, 1073 or 610... so I'll check out the new 88RS, but it's not an automatic buy for me.

Everything about the original was just a slight notch above Logic's stock stuff.

An MKII of the other Neves would have been much more appreciated.

Yeah I've had the original 88RS for over 5 years now (with an old Solo Neve bundle), never really gotten a lot of use. I'm interested in trying the MKII as a Unison preamp though.

Interesting... I just saw the intro video for it.

Oddly, my first reaction (and maybe this is explained more by my genealogy of being German), was to recoil at the '88 Cue Ball' track ball on the hw console. I've never seen that before ... but I've never been near a real 88RS in real life either... but that's a helluva well-known Nazi-sympathizer symbol in Germany. I'm laughing about it now, but my first reaction was "UH OH"... hahah.

Can't wait to hear it!

well people probably asked for more channel strips so it had to be either the neve or the ssl update.

I'll demo it but I have vcc and basically never use it, but the unison pre stuff may be interesting.

Wow, can't those moron Nazis come up with anything original? They stole the Swastika from Hindu mythology and now they're taking the 88 Cue Ball (which means putting "English" on the ball, and I believe Neve is a Brit company).

Maybe it's because hateful things can't come up with anything remotely interesting or visually pleasing, so they have to steal something that already exists and has meaning behind it.

Count me in when I have the cash ! Sound quality is more important than plugin count.

But I agree that these UAD-2 cards are starting to feel powerless. Even an OCTO is starting to be not enough...

When I see how few CPU stuff like VSM-3 uses, I'm wondering why it's so hungry on a UAD card. Reason is, that SHARC DSP processor is way too limited !

Well at under 50% you can run 4 and 8 on the 4 and 8 pre for tracking ?
Yeah and after that, no more DSP available for anything else.

If you wanna use, reverb, delay, tape or anything else, you're screwed.

Yes, if that's all you will use it for I guess it's fine. But for mixing it's a different story. An Octo would let you run 16 instances, which won't cover most mixes.

Not arguing, but as it is a channel strip you could have one on each buss, but the value depends on how complex your mix is / how much dsp you have ?

everytime ua has one of its accelerator sales, I now conclude one of two things, either a new hw product is coming or a new desirable but dsp intensive plug is about to be released.

UA kind of telegraphs these with their hw coupon sales.

I personally wouldn't have a problem working with the DSP requirements. With the dynamics and eq section disabled it only uses 16% (the filters still work). If you disable some of those sections that you aren't using you can easily squeeze some reverb, delay and tape plugins in. The only time I use a lot of compression and eq when tracking is when recording single sources like vocals, bass or guitars. In those cases there is plenty of DSP for the full channel strip as well as tape, reverb and delay. If i'm recording something with lots of inputs (like drums) I don't use compression and eq on every channel. Only really need the preamp section and filters in those situations. Mixing of course is another story, but that's what the satellite's are for.

The way I see it is that it's 3 plugins in one (preamp, eq, dynamics). 38% is not too bad considering that. I personally am most excited about using it as a unison preamp. You could always use the mkII in the unison slot with eq and dynamics disabled and use the legacy on an insert for the eq and dynamics. That should save you about 10% DSP.

maybe I was suggesting that you print your tracks wet with the plug and then release to free your dsp up; just a suggestion :)
