UAD vst in ableton live - plugin preset change via midi program change messages?

hi all, i'm looking to invest in the ultimate 4 bundle to use in ableton live 9. can anyone tell me if the vst plugins allow incoming midi program change messages to switch presets? i'm thinking in terms of live performance, but also with more complex mixing (such as different reverb/distortion presets used at different points in a song). many other vst plugins, such as native instrument's, allow this behavior. but sadly not all vsts have this ability coded in (waves - i'm lookn at you!). any information would be great appreciated! thanks in advance...

I don't believe the UAD plugins accept midi program change messages. I've also never tried though.

However, if you're using Live, you can set up an effect group with multiple instances of the same effect in parallel, with each effect having a different preset, and then map a macro control to map a knob to cycle the effects on and off, without consuming DSP on the ones that are off. See attached for an example.

thanks for the response iDt! i have indeed tried that technique in the past with some plugins that didn't support PM'ing that i've needed allot of preset switching for. (this is why i love ableton, because you can do awesome 'grouping' tricks like that)... but for the sake of conserving ram in a live setting, since i'm running on a macbook with 4gigs of ram, after 100+ instances of some plugins(for my typical 2+ hour live set this is a normal amount) ram becomes scarce and crashes more frequent which is why i'm trying to adopt using more midi program switching plugs like NI's stuff. plus it's a cleaner live set with less stacking/nesting of plugins in groups. but perhaps i need to consider getting more ram! thanks again for the response...

Anytime, mate! Yeah, a RAM upgrade would do you some wonders. I can't even imagine working in Ableton with only 4 gigs of RAM these days. Not sure what version of OSX and Ableton you're running, but in my case, Yosemite on it's own tends to use about 3 gigs on a clean boot, and I've had Ableton use twice that in some of my sessions.

I feel like I've seen a workaround in Ableton that would function essentially as PM changes without the complexity of the nested plugins, but I never had a need for it so I didn't store that info. Lemme dig in to it over the weekend and hopefully I'll have a better answer come Monday.

just now catching up to your post - indeed yes for a ram upgrade... it's the next thing on my list! also, if you happen to run across that PM trick you mentioned, i'm all ears. i also have allot of other vsts that don't innately switch presets via incoming PM so any tricks for that are welcome!

Hey ots, just wanted to let you know I hadn't forgotten about you. I came across this question on the Ableton Q/A which led me to this topic on the Ableton forums. Looks like the workaround I was thinking of was the one that I mentioned. I believe the second page of the topic links to a more recent thread discussing the issue in more detail.

    Cheers!
