    UAD/Unison plug-ins for tracking...

I’m trying to decide what I should get in terms of UAD plug-ins, particularly Unison pres/processing for tracking. I’ve got a decent amount of experience working ITB, and getting pretty good home/project-studio results always working with what I have on hand, but I’ve just updated to an Apollo 8 Quad (I’ve been using an Apogee Mini-Me for years, but one of the channels has started giving me problems, and I expect the converters/pres on the Apollo to be an improvement). The current ‘dream studio’ promo bundle gives me enough to get started, I’m sure, but I’m doing a project over the next few months that could justify buying some additional plugins, if it seems worth having them. I’m primarily thinking in terms of tracking- haven’t decided if I’ll be mixing this project or if we’ll have someone else in for that. I have no qualms about committing and printing through pres/some light processing/etc. I don’t think I’ll be recording the drums, just everything else, and for the most part one thing at a time. Everyone involved in the project lives in different places, so the process is going to be a little bass-akwards, with the drummer recording in a ‘real’ studio to home-recorded scratch tracks/click from everyone else, then once the drums are down, everyone redoing their parts. Not really ideal, but it is what it is. I’ll be taking my recording setup (as well as additional portable sound-treatment, etc) to each participants’ ‘home studio’ for the overdubbing. Fundamental instrumentation is drums, bass, acoustic and electric guitars, female lead vox, male and female harmonies/bvox, and sampled piano, B3 and some other keys, some strings and other orchestration. Its sort of alt/indy stuff, running a range from Pretenders-y rock, to the Breeders alt/rock, to some more spare, Aimee Mann-ish/Mental Health stuff, with a bit of Mazzy Star thrown in. I’m leaning towards a kind of dry-ish, warm/vintage 70s tone, overall.

I’m using Logic X, current mic locker is a 414xls, KM-184 pair, MD421, couple SM57s, and a Royer 121, and I have an RNC and RNP I sometime use, too. May end up renting a different mic for the lead vocal, depending, but I’m pretty sure I can cover all else with what I’ve got.

Anyway, I’m sort of thinking about the Neve 1073 and the API Vision, maybe the Manley VoxBox, if I went for one of the 3-plugs packages…. Though maybe I can get what I want with the UA610, LA-2A, 1176 & Studer plugs that come with the promo deal…. It’s been many years since I was involved in anything recorded through an analog desk, but back then I liked the stuff done on a Neve better than that done on an SSL, for what its worth.

Thanks for any insights or other comments.

Try the demos, you could probably get the demo part done with just those. Then you can decide what you want for the final part of the work. I haven't tried the SSL yet, but have all the others. It's hard to know what you would like, but you could try the neve strips and go from there.

Now there's a plan. Why didn't I think of that??

No doubt you can make as good a record as you are capable of, with just what you have in the bundle, or less. However... if that money is longing to be free, you won't do any better than what you have outlined - maybe some might prefer the neve 88RS over the Vision, but they are different animals, both excellent. Vision is a great rock mic pre and EQ (and a very good compressor/gate) - midrange clarity for days...For out and out analog flavour the 1073 pre is king, and the Manley makes a great front end for vocals or bass or ...(although the 1073 also does a great vocal, or well, anything ). If you don't like the SSL vibe, then it's a pity that the latest e series channel strip is perhaps the best, most realistic emulation currently going, with possibly the API 2500 stereo compressor as a contender. In any case, if you want to spend money on making the most of your UA Unison mic pres, it will be well spent, but take the time to demo and record with them all before you decide, because once you buy it, it's yours forever, even if you don't end up using it ... I would say I have ended up using less than half of what I have bought, regularly. Measure twice...

I'll add, I have a 59 0018 Martin parlor guitar, and I like the 610 emulation on it, A or B, with the la2a mk11, depending on the track. They are all good to me, depending on what you are recording. I have several channels of out board pres, in a mix, they aren't that different. Flavors.

Speaking of pre's ... this week I used one of the Peluso 251 (Telefunken tribute) on a vocalist. I used the 1073 unison and my god it was just amazing. Also, surprisingly (to me), the UA 601-A on that vocal mic is phenomenal as well.

You really should just demo and see what works. Some things may surprise you.

    UAD/Unison plug-ins for tracking...

I use a lot of hardware 1073 or Great River with my Lawson 251. Don't know if I've ever used the 2-610 with it. Need to.

Unison versions of the 1073 and 610A/B do a great job, BTW.

When I'm doing remote recording I use the Vision a lot. Works so well.

Saying goodbye to the Lawsons once Spheres arrive, though.

Are you going to record the electric guitars mic'd or di'd? In the latter case, maybe some of the amp sims might be taken into consideration. Ampeg SVT, Fender Tweed and Marshall Silver are very good (but I'm in a slightly 'softer' less rocky line of music I must say).

I was properly impressed with the 610 unison and the 1073 with that microphone... but ultimately, the (wa) 312api preamp won out, which I also did not expect to happen. But it has some very special mojo in it that totally clicked with that microphone.

Well, I can't necessarily claim the $ is longing to be free.....!
My preference for Neve over SSL is based on work years ago and more ignorant ears, so I'll no doubt demo the SSL, too.
