With plenty of mixing examples and newly found sounds -- you'll need to set aside about 30 minutes for the whole thing, but well worth it:
Giles Goes Through Sgt. Peppers:
Why Remix 'Sgt. Pepper's'? Giles Martin, The Man Behind The Project, Explains : All Songs Considered : NPR
Funny thing for me was that I was so looking forward to it's release. Then Jimi comes along and spoils it. I heard Are You Experienced and nothing was the same again and I had entered a parallel universe. Oh to be 14 and relive that set of emotions again.
I still love Sgt Pepper - but perhaps not as much Are You Experienced.
I think that it is strange to look back at those times and take in the sense of sonic adventure that was going on around us. Given that I first heard Zappa's Freakout round about the same time I felt that my mind was being irrevocably altered. I did laugh later at the Pepper pastiche cover.
It is so easy to ignore the originality of this music. The sense of experimentation in both composition, recording and the use of sound given the limitations that these artists faced. It is impossible to comprehend Pepper being recorded on a 4 track. Not to mention that wonder of a single that was "Good Vibrations".
There is a lot of good music around today. However, then there was a feeling that you had never heard anything like this before, that was totally unique. A little later I was listening to the Jon Peel show and on came King Crimson with 21st Century Schizoid Man and In The Court Of The Crimson King and I was amazed yet again. Just the same feeling I had the first time I heard "Bitches Brew". What the F***!
And what a wonderful perspective he gave us! I love listening to this mix with first generation recordings of the instruments throughout. It didn't need to be done. Giles knows that better than anyone. It's not meant to replace the old albums, but to give us another perspective on something so special.
