Sgt. Pepper Happy 50th

Funny thing for me was that I was so looking forward to it's release. Then Jimi comes along and spoils it. I heard Are You Experienced and nothing was the same again and I had entered a parallel universe. Oh to be 14 and relive that set of emotions again.
I still love Sgt Pepper - but perhaps not as much Are You Experienced.

Talk about a trip through time! The article and video links in this thread bring a lot of memories. I'm an old enough fart to remember the beginnings of stereo in the 50s. My father was an early adopter of new technology, and our house had the early stereo "hi-fi" with speaker cabinets he built.

Ahhhh, the good old days. It's much better today.

I think that it is strange to look back at those times and take in the sense of sonic adventure that was going on around us. Given that I first heard Zappa's Freakout round about the same time I felt that my mind was being irrevocably altered. I did laugh later at the Pepper pastiche cover.

It is so easy to ignore the originality of this music. The sense of experimentation in both composition, recording and the use of sound given the limitations that these artists faced. It is impossible to comprehend Pepper being recorded on a 4 track. Not to mention that wonder of a single that was "Good Vibrations".

There is a lot of good music around today. However, then there was a feeling that you had never heard anything like this before, that was totally unique. A little later I was listening to the Jon Peel show and on came King Crimson with 21st Century Schizoid Man and In The Court Of The Crimson King and I was amazed yet again. Just the same feeling I had the first time I heard "Bitches Brew". What the F***!

I still say WTF to Bitches Brew :) LOL

And of course Pet Sounds blew just as many minds as well.

Remix???
As a Beatle junkie of course i am curious about what new parts might be uncovered.

But why not also fix Mona Lisa's smile while we're at it.
and colorize "King Kong" ... and the fingerprints on his fur
some things are just meant to be the way they are!

I listen to Sgt Pepper regularly - and there ain't nothin wrong with it. Lately the remastered stereo version on vinyl, with an upgrade Sumiko cartridge.
I agree some of the very early albums in stereo were terrible, with extreme panning : half the band on the left, the other half on the right and nothing in middle.
Pepper is not this way! True, there were a limited amount of stems to work with . Some vocals are panned but others are not. its all just incredibly creative. Just listen to a "Day in the Life", when johns vocal slowly moves from right to left in the second verse - Brilliant!

Yes I know the mono mixes was the primary focus, But the original stereo mix was state of art and absolutely no slouch.
I thought the "1" remixes were interesting, for the early material . But once you got to the Abbey Road era songs, there was no point really.

I grew up withe the original stereo mix and many hundred of listenings later fail to see the point. At least not enough to buy another version...

After about Five Lessons of the new version including Strawberry Fields on the second CD I'll have to say that it's pretty stunning. Give it a chance and I think you'll like it if not just go back to the old version and enjoy life. That's something John might say right?! :)

I also feel that it didn't need to be done but what I have heard does impress me :) Great Giles has turned me into a Pepper hypocrite and blue meany !!

It didn't need to be done. Giles knows that better than anyone. It's not meant to replace the old albums, but to give us another perspective on something so special.

And what a wonderful perspective he gave us! I love listening to this mix with first generation recordings of the instruments throughout.

I hope he does this for the other records too. Revolver, Abbey Road, White Album... I'd love to hear remixes of those if they are to turn out like this Pepper remix.
