Hello
The lower frequency limit on my monitor speakers is 45hz

Is this fine? I mainly deal in rock/metal music. no Dance or EDM stuff.

Many thanks

say it short : it's fine !

and if your speaker would be able to produce a CLEAN 45Hz, it would be perfect
and if your room would be able to react cleanly to these low frequencies, it would be heaven ;)

For nearfield monitoring during general editing/mixing tasks, I would say it is fine, especially because even a decently treated room may have significant response troubles over there (so it is quite worthless to be able to accurately reproduce a range your room will immediately alterate).

listen to some of your all time favorite albums from a sonic point of view.......how do those albums sound on those monitors? Do they sound like you are used to hearing them? something missing or is there something more there now?

to me that is the ultimate test that goes beyond what anything on paper says.......if your favorite albums sound great on those monitors then I would say you have a very useful tool to work with.

This is a good advice; nevertheless, don't forget your mixes could have some extra undesired stuff in the sub bass range (very common when working on small near fields only) and you will not able to realize that. Both your favorite album and your mix will play excellent on your monitors, but when translating on bigger systems, the album will still sound perfect, while your mix will reveal its defects. So, take this into account, especially if you finalize your music by yourself.

All good points, I guess that a pair of monitors with 8" woofers and a Lower limit frequency 35 Hz would be better?

Well, it's a tradeoff, even when you start to get into reasonably high end monitors like ATC SCM 25A's ($8000 / pair), etc.

When you extend the bass you pay a price in the midrange, it's all tradeoff's.

And don't forget this does you no good if you don't have a decently treated room.

So 2 questions:

What is your primary genre ?
What is is your budget ?

And if you haven't measured and treated your room, you are wasting your money, might as well use just headphones, yucchhh !

A very good way to detect undesirable stuff in the sub bass range is to know how to interpret your speaker physical behaviour : abnormal movement of your boomer ( long vibrations of the membrane but no sound ) means SubBass
Headphone's are helping too

Well there is always the option of a Subwoofer. I have been very happy with my Adams Sub 8. It has been very easy to set up and intuitive to operate.

My room is treated Geoff, genre mainly 'Rock' Metal. I really don't want to complicate things with a subwoofer, I have a pair of Genelec 8040b now, speaker is 6.5".

Well, simple answer is, don't add a subwoofer if you don't want to, you should be fine with those 8040b's :)
