Can't route mac output into Virtual channels after upgrading to Console 2.0

Hey.
Loving the new console!

Anyone else having this problem?

Before v8, i had my audioMIDI setup so that the speaker outputs went into a virtual channel before hitting the MON out, so i could add inserts / change level etc -(thanks to a sweet tip on this forum).
Now, I can't seem to do that after updating to Console 2.
The only difference I can see is that you have to add 4 more outputs in the console settings if you want to see all 8 (4 new) virtual channels in the core audio setup.
I've tried all Virtual channels though and none of them seem to be working. iTunes or any other app continues to play but just straight out the monitor outputs.

I also deleted my AUDIOMIDI prefs and restarted and that didn't fix it.

Any help/advice?
Thanks.

EDIT: so i was trying other things, and i changed the "Multichannel" tab in the speaker config to "5.1" instead of "Stereo" and now it seems to be working. But only the speaker outputs i select in the "stereo" section seem to change the Console routing - the multi-channel selection doesn't affect anything...

just to add - QUICKLOOK audio (pressing space bar on files in OS X) doesn't seem to be routing through the AUDIOMIDI speaker config. Annoyingly.

Anyone know a workaround for this?

Hi Xyang,

Sometimes the Core Audio prefs get corrupted and you need to trash them. Give this a try:

1. Navigate to /Library/Preferences/Audio
2. Delete file: com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
3. Delete file: com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
4. Restart the computer
5. Reassign the system sounds to Console's virtual inputs
(Audio MIDI Setup.app>Audio Devices window>Output tab>Configure Speakers…)
(Assign the left/right speakers to the desired virtual channels listed in the "Ch" column within the Output tab)

An issue with OS X / specific apps.

Hey GK,
Thanks for the reset tips. However I don't think corruption is the problem - as output from iTunes, spotify, safari all work and go through the virtual channels. I think it actually has to do with how OS X routes the quick look/view audio - seems it bypasses the AUDIOMIDI config and just goes out 1-2...
It's happening both at the studio and at home.
Also skype's output doesn't seem to go through it either.
Must be app specific.
Will try get some confirmation from apple and report back.
Thanks.

This did it for me also......Thanks!!!!

I was having console 2.0 and Mac sound/ virtual channel weirdness. The thing that finally cleared it up for me was to do a total delete of all UAD files and then a fresh install. After that it all worked as expected.

Same problem here. Tried all day long to route software (Guitar Pro 6, BIAB via Parallels) outputs to virtual i/o in console2. It just won't work. All audio is sent to the main aka monitor out. Other programs do the trick e.g. ITunes. The first-mentioned do not.

Already have deleted AUDIOMIDI prefs (the path Gannon described is unfortunately not available on my system, pref files he described do not exist, there is not even an "audio" folder in library) and set everything in AU App. Even the Multichannel tab won't change anything.

Any advice is most welcome. I really need to tame and control these outputs via console. Am I missing something?

Well, already start missing my RME TotalMix desk where I could route any audio signal wherever I liked too. :(

Hi Septolus,

Make sure you're going into the root Library, not the User Library. Start at 'Computer' and then select the name of your boot drive. You should see four folders: Applications, System, Library and Users - that's the Library you want.

Hope that helps!

Hi Gannon,
thank you very much for your quick response.

As you might already have noticed I am a total newbie to Macs and OSX. It's just a fortnight by now I am using Apple after 25 years on Windows. I ventured to swap OS solely for the Apollo interfaces and accelerators which are just great. As I earn my living using that beautiful gear I am a bit anxious about everything working exactly as expected and actually can't afford gear "downtimes".

Anyway, I was able to follow your instructions by the letter (thanks again) but unfortunately nothing has changed. It is so far impossible to route some programs I heavily rely on to virtual inputs in console. These progs only offer "Universal Audio Apollo" as an audio output option and that routes their respective audio signals inevitably to monitor out (1/2) in console. But that white noise in OSX Audio_Midi_Settings is routed to my selected virtual channels.

I am stuck here and as being the before mentioned OSX greenhorn not able to think of any solution to that.

Hopefully I am still missing something ...

So, I've also found that some applications have a limitation that doesn't allow them to be routed to virtual channels.

The most you can hope for in cases where the App has very simple audio interface options is to have it route to whatever the system output is, and then change that system output in the audio/midi setup.

Hopefully the app will just think it's routing to the mac system sound output, and you're routing that where you want it, rather than trying to get the app to do exactly what you want on it's own.

Unfortunately it is not possible to route Yosemites system outputs to further (external) outputs. At least to my knowledge.

After all I found a workaround to my problems. Soundflower allows to route these program outputs to consoles virtual channels. What a relief! :)

But input gain control on consoles virtual channels would be quite handy anyway. I'll gonna check my RME interface next week if there's routing issues with OSX as well. That's gonna be interesting. ;)

But thanks to Soundflower I am back to work and teaching. All-soothing that is ;)

Works for me in Yosemite... When I change my output to Apollo, it comes up on the virtual channels just like I want; no sound flower.

Thanks Gannon, this worked for me. Not sure what changed in my setup, but tonight Safari wouldn't route to Virtual channels, whereas iTunes and VLC would. But then, I applied your steps, and now its all ok. Thanks

Worked for me too! Thanks.

Just ran into this problem and the "Multichannel" tab in the speaker config to "5.1" instead of "Stereo" worked for me as well.
