Using Apollo Twin Duo & External Grace Preamp

Just started test recording vocals using Pro Tools 12. Recording is happening, but it sounds a little softer than I'd expect with the Grace gain at the halfway mark. On the Apollo, I've selected Headphone and turned the middle knob for volume increase while I record, but get no sound in my headphone. If I select Preamp on the Apollo and increase the gain then I get sound in my headset. I was assuming the gain on the Apollo should be all the way down since I'm using an external preamp? I'm probably missing something obvious - hoping another set of eyeballs can clue me in. I'm going from PT8 and MBox to PT12 and the Apollo Twin Duo... so a bit of catching up to do. Thx.

So you'll want to be going from the grace into the line in on Apollo > that's the TRS part of the combo jack. So make sure you're not using an XLR connector on Apollo's end as that is only attached to it's mic input.
Then make sure the input channel is set to line. Leaving it at its lowest setting should work fine for accepting a line in, but you can turn it to get more input, or use a unison preamp plugin and play with that stuff for more color or changing gain staging of that line input. Think of it just like the line in on an analog console if you had one.

Then make sure your routing to the headphone is correct. Check what your headphone is sourced from in the cue section on the lower right of console, and make sure everything you're wanting to hear in the headphones is, in fact, routed to that source.

    Make sense?

Thx so much for the response. Everything seems good except the headphone issue.

On my previous setup with PT8/MBox interface, I'd plug in my headphones and it was a done deal for rec & mon. This seems more complicated?
Would you be able to send specific instructions for using headphones for basic recording and monitoring? I've tried different selections from Cue Outputs but I haven't got it right yet. I'm singing to pre-recorded tracks with no additional plug-ins or effects while recording. The only thing that's getting recorded are my vocals. I won't be offended if you are super-specific! Grateful for your kind help.

Here is a video by UA's Gannon with a good explanation of setting up The Apollo with Pro tools.

Go to 9:36 for the headphone section

Probably what you want is to set the HP to use MON as source; that way everything you hear in the monitors will be mirrored to headphones. Setting the HP source to it's own cue bus will allow you to do other routing like creating separate mixes when you want to do that.
