UPDATED—The SHOOTOUT is HERE:

Here are the first files. These were recorded with a custom splitter that nulls down to an inaudible level.
Recorded with an Audio Technica 50 Series AT5040 (not to be confused with the 40 Series AT4050). AT5040 Studio Vocal Microphone

The 5040 has a unique capsule design and does NOT have a high pass filter, so this presents as much bottom end and sub lows as a Neve preamp can reproduce. Boomy to a fault so you can get an idea of the low end.

Acoustic Guitar (finger picking Tacoma JK50C).

Preamp A
Preamp B
Preamp C
Preamp D

Indie Folk Vocal (person 8-10" from mic)

Preamp A
Preamp B
Preamp C
Preamp D

OR, here's a zip with all of them for your DAW

-->Here's the shootout key that identifies which files are which - A, B, C, and D Actual Units Revealed

P.S. These files are hosted in my paid Sync.com account and it would really help me if you'd sign up for a FREE account by following my referral link - https://www.sync.com/?_sync_refer=318552ef0
I've had to move away from my business Dropbox account since they dropped support for the app and prevented it from connecting with no warning whatsoever (just stopped syncing, followed by an email) on 10.8.5 and earlier. Really bad breakup there...

Thinking about doing a shootout between 1073/1290's.

Would be:

Vintage 1073
UAD Unison 1073
1073LB
'73Jr

If anyone has a Vintech, BAE, or AMS they'd consider loaning out a few days I'd happily include those too. I can pay shipping.

Unlike a lot of similar shootouts I would be able to send the same take to all preamps simultaneously.

Let me know if you're interested and what you'd want to hear through it.

Great idea!

This would be great!, especially if you could do it on a few vocal phrases and kick drums. Maybe even adding a few instances of line gain to the source material going up 5db each instance.

The real 1073 doesn't have an output fader, so if I push the gain it would just end up clipping the converter, but I may be able to try the others. It would defeat the purpose to an extent, though.

Okay, new request: would someone send me some well recorded guitar DI's I can use for Reamp as well?

As of now I'm thinking:

Medium Guitar (reamped)
Heavy Guitar (reamped)
Contemporary Male Vocal (split)
High Rock/Metal Vocal (split)
Snare (split)
Kick (split)

If this all goes well and has good interest I'll also do an API shootout session.

Couldn't you just use an inline pad?

The pad changes the sound!

Okay. This is happening. I would really like a a couple well recorded DI's to use for part of the shoot. I haven't picked up a guitar in anger for quite some time...

Yes! I am very eager to hear a comparison. I haven't seen any real Unison comparisons online. Even Unison Neve/API/UA versus the stock Apollo pre is strangely missing from the internet.

Hmmm... piece of cake. I'll do a pass of something through all 4 Apollo options. I also happen to have the hardware to match. ;)

Hey Matt, wondering if you had any low priced clones to test against, like a Golden Age Pre73?

Been using/owning 1073 incarnations since the 90's. Original Neve and BAE. They all sound a little different unit to unit. Just my humble opinion. UA has captured the tone almost exact. Something they have done with the MKII's. The hardware unit has a touch more depth which is the case in these comparisons, but UA is about spot on. A few percentage points won't matter to most. Especially if your monitoring and room is not up to par. You probably won't even hear the differences. I won't give up my 1084 to use the UA 1073mkII unison though.

Well, I did a part of the shootout so far (some vocals). Still could certainly use a couple DI tracks from a member for use with this.

Have done:
Male rock vocals
Acoustic guitar
Nylon guitar
Male indie-folk vocals

Could be a long while before I do more.

Want it as-is now?
