Hi
I have seen an SSL Nucleus for sale, quite cheap.

I know it has an audio interface built in, but can I override this? and just use it as a DAW controller with my Apollo Twin Duo? or would my DAW only recognise one or the other at the same time?

Many thanks in advance.

I have been researching the controller marketplace ( like you I see on this forum :) and dont own the Nucleus (but am interested in it too).

The interface is completely separate from the controller aspect and in fact you dont even have to install the sound card drivers if not needed according to the manual.

You simply have to add it as control surface to your DAW setup. Your Apollo of course is not a control surface - so no conflict.

I have also seen on other blog posts that you can use the SPDIF output from the Nucleus and go to the ADAT input on your your Apollo with a coax/Toslink converter.

Doesnt sound like you are interested in the sound card but for some time its been a bit of pie in the face of SSL that sound card does not work on newer macs with haswell chipset and El Capitan. They have a note about it on their site.

Quite an inspiring looking console I have to say.

Nice to have some owners of Apollo's and Nucleus to pipe in on their experience.

Thanks for this info, I did read somewhere about the SSL/El Capitan problem also.

Would be great to hear from anyone who has one, especially an owner with both the SSL & Apollo.

I have used the Nucleus and it feels amazing. But here is the problem. A few years ago, it offered two great preamps, their plugins, and a monitoring section. I now don't need the monitoring section or the plugins. The two preamps are great SSLs, but I'd rather have them as a 500 series or other rack gear so that it was portable. So basically, my idea is that SSL needs to release a new version that acts only as a controller and costs less. I'm still using a Mackie MCU and waiting for the day the nucleus comes out as a thinner controller that just does the controlling I need.

I actually had/have plans to build a modular controller..

Racksize frame with varying hight, modules with different layouts mirroring the plugins, real nobs, proper vu meters and moving faders.

You can put your scribblestrip and transport section where you need it to be.

I asked a few investors to fund the prototype that would go on kickstarter, but they all seem to think the product was too ”niche” with no return :(
