External mic pre before Unison channel strip?

I have an Apollo 8, but also a Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5017. I like the sound of the API Vision channel strip, but am not sure if it would be better to (a) go into the Portico and use the Vision in line-in mode, or (b) go direct into the Apollo and use the Vision in mic-pre mode. Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

External mic pre before Unison channel strip?

Your first instinct (a) was definitely the correct one. With the line input there's no impedance switching, so no need to use the Unison slot either. A regular insert slot will work great.

Pre to pre is a bad idea. I doubt the Portico would get damaged by phantom power, but lots of device outputs can be. It's not just that, though, at anything other than the lowest preamp setting you'll be clipping the input. Preamps expect a tiny, tiny microphone signal, not a robust line level out like what your Portico will send. There's also a difference in impedance, but that's much less of a concern than these others.

Thanks, Matt. I guess my real question is about coloration. The Portico is pretty clean sounding, and so I was using the Vision strip (not in a Unison slot) to add line-level coloration to "tape". What I'm wondering is if I skip the Portico and use the Vision in Unison as a mic pre (connecting my mic to the Apollo directly), whether the 212l's different impedance would add more/better coloration.

    Thanks again.

The 212 isn't as colored as you might be hoping for. Along the lines of the Portico. You can definitely make sure phantom is off, put API in Unison, pull its output knob way down, engage the pad and try stacking it with your Portico. Turn the API gain up until you get some color/distortion, then bring the output up.

If you're not looking for the that type, have you tried the 610? That's a nice, colored pre. So is the 1073 and VOXBOX.
