1073 vs 1081

How close are they (the HW versions) to each other?
Are they essentially the same except for 5 bands instead of 3 ?

If this is true , and just to play devils advocate :
Wouldn't you think the 5 band would cost more than the 3 band?? (yikes - more than $250?!?!) .
If I owned the 5 band 1081 when it finally comes into being, why would i ever want to buy a 3 band 1073?
If there were a bundle, what would be the point (aside from plug lust - not that there's anything wrong with that :) ?

Why would you want the five band neve, when you can have the five band Cambridge for $100 less? My guess is they will sound different. (Although that is a guess, I have never used a real 1073 or 1081 so, well...)

I guess the 5 band neve will sound alot better than the cambridge eq. Already the 1073 sounds much smoother.

Yes, I was kind of ironic, the difference I think will be in sound, not features...

I'm starting to trust audio companies less and less as they seem to cater more and more to prosumer home studio users (the majority of which seem to buy things because they \"look\" similar to something they saw in a pro studio).

Anyone else think (but hoping otherwise) that the 1073 is basically a 1081 program with a couple of bands disabled?

I have asked the very same question here a while ago. Also about AMS-Neve v.s. Brent Avrill and other neve-clones.

In the end you still have to listen to them yourself. The bad thing is that, here in Taiwan, we don't have everything we need to do an A/B test, so I just went on buying a Brent Avrill Neve 1073. As much as I like it, I'm still wondering, once in a while, that if I should sell it and buy an AMS-Neve 1073 instead....

Relax - the circuit in the 1073 is pure class A and very different form the 1081.

UA are brilliant at modelling vintage gear and you can be sure they will sound different in character.

The 1073 has big broad curves and is a very powerful EQ, the 1081 is very different and more subtle and has more control.

The 1081 will NOT make the 1073 obsolete. I'm sure you'll want both.

as much as i love the 1073, i'm not so sure it sounds like a real neve very much at all. (and before you freak out... yes i have used the hardware version)

my reaction to it is similar to what i thought of the URS version:

\"it's a nice EQ.... it just doesn't sound like a neve\"
