Despite of the roll off on hi frs when working at 44.1..how would you compare both? Which has more colour? In case they are different colours how do they compare with each other?

To my ears, the Pultec/PultecPro has so much character (even set flat) that I put it on, and just sculpt the sound it makes to my liking. In other words, I begin with the sound it wants to make, and then make it go closer to where I want to be. In the end, the sound is about 40% what the Pultec wants to make, and about 60% what I had in mind, always with that bold, slightly wild element. Sort of Lambourghini.

The Neve, on the other hand, doesn't have that sort of dominant character. It's much more compliant to my wishes. It pretty much does what I want to do, but with a dignified and regal bearing, as much as to say, \"Certainly, m'lord! Does m'lord wish anything else?\" Very posh! More Rolls Royce.

Pardon the metaphorical language, but it's the best I can do to express what I'm finding.

For me: Pultec tends to set tracks more to the back. With the 1073 is it very easy to bring tracks to the front directly onto your nose.
Do you work with the MEQ-5 Midrange, or just the EQP-1A?

You can get things pretty much up the schnozzola with that mid box. :)

The Neve EQ has a lot of weight added when you use it. The Pultec adds a nice gentle boost or reduction while still having air. My Waves Ren. sounds smoother. My Waves SSL was able to add some similar weight, but the Neve had more color while the SSL was cleaner. All in all I like the Neve EQ, but with all my other plug ins, I don't need it, but I do like it.

Ooooo! You mean the LF bands? I don't think this will be the go-to EQ for the low end on a lot of stuff, because it is a little bit ham-fisted there. But to me, from the mids up, it's got a light, totally open feel. It doesn't feel like something I've glopped over the signal, but rather like I've done something nice at the mic or the pre!

I thought you might have meant that. In my studio, the two low bands sort of have that, but from mid and high bands don't. That is as true in comparison with most of the other EQs I've got, and especially the Pultec, as it is in any sort of absolute sense.

How about the rest of you, as regards the 1073 from the mids up? Weight and fullness? Or openess and air?

yes

Weight,

thats the word for the Neve,

Feels like large weights in my hands when i turn the dials, has more weight.

The only word i can find at the moment for it, ( apart from Brilliant! )very very happy with the results up to now.

first words to my mind are openess, and air, as well as light with a character that does'nt dominate too much on your tracks in a tiresome way.The sound is beautiful and i'm able to get very smooth high end boosts without sibilance sounds, brittleness and other artifacts. It truly has a sound worth killing for!

I echo some of the comments above.. Had a chance to try out the 1073 this afternoon.. Most all of our music is acoustic guitars, mandolins, upright bass, banjo.. I tried the 1073 on rhythm and lead guitar and banjo in the hour or so I had to fool with it and I liked it so much, I went on and bought it! Just a fantastic sound from what brief time I had with it today!!
