4 UADs seems like a lot?

newbie post =P i just got my first uad-1 the other day (finally... i've wanted one for a year or more), and in reading various software forums including this one looking for stuff about the cards i've see a lot of signatures with \"4x UAD1\" in them...

my curiosity is what sort of sessions do most of you (if you are in this group) do that you have that many cards... is it just for the flexibility or is it actually necessary for you, and why? high track count? high sample rate?

in mixing a few things and playing with the fairchild i've maxed mine out a few times but short of putting uad plugs on every single track (the eq sure is nice), i don't know where i'd need more than two unless i did everything at 96k, which isn't really worth it without having a really good batch of converters to start with. ugh, money.

i think you can get by with 1 or 2 cards if you freeze or bounce strateticly.
But you loose a bit of flexibilty - so i just ordered my 3. card to fill the last slot of my G5 (and opted against the poco - pci)
Also i am in love with the plugins - and think such a friendly company like UA needs to be supported ;)

For me it's the fact that we record at 88.2/24 with track counts as high as 51 on one project currently.. I don't use UAD plugs in every case on every track but they are my Go To Plugs without a doubt!

2 cards (Which is what I have in the DAW) doesn't go that far - even at 48KHz with a hefty track count.
Even on a more conservative track count of 24 or so, it's simple to max out 2 cards in double-quick time.
at 96KHz, I'd get the same from 4 cards as I do now from 2.

So I'd actually like to have an open ended card count.
4 is not enough.

I have my 3rd card sitting at home right now....will be in the box & in use by tonight. Did the last album on 2 but am finding that on the new album I am hitting 90% quite often and I don't like to freeze as it slows down workflow & creative mixing.

1 card was never enough so the 2nd came within a few months....2 years later I'm up to 3 and I believe that will probably do the job with headroom ;)

4 cards is like having 2 cards when you are recording at 88.2 vs. 44.1...

I like to be prepared for any eventuality and recently I've been doing some really important projects and they've called for a lot of the best UA plugs. For me its a no brainer to have 4 cards. I can see going for more should UA allow that in one system. I could freeze some tracks, but for how I work its better for me to just have the available power to run the plugs live. I do like the Freeze option tho. Its very easy and effective for freeing up DSP.

When going to higher sample rates as I want to do in the future, its going to be a must to have at least 4 cards.
