Here's a neat trick... you can get that old-school plate reverb sound, the same way they did it in the 60's & 70's... adding a pre-delay to the plate using a tape-delay (in this case, the RE-201).
1: Create an FX send channel
2: Insert the 1176LN
3: Followed by the RE-201 in the next insert down
4: Followed by the Plate 140 in the next insert down
5: Followed by the PultecPro in the next insert down
Set the RE-201 to:
- wet only
- reverb off
- bass & treble at 12:00
- input @ 9:00
- output @ 12:00
- delay setting = first setting (lower left)
- intensity = OFF (knob fully down)
Set Plate to:
- wet only
- all EQ and filters off
Now you can adjust the pre-delay of the plate reverb using the repeat rate on the RE-201 (just like in the old days). This will give you the sound of the tape delay AND the plate (again, just like the old days).
Adjust the 1176LN to compress the input of the reverb to taste (just like the old days).
Adjust the input of the RE-201 to get the desired amount of saturation.
Choose the Plate (A, B, or C) that sounds best for your song.
Adjust the Plate damping and stereo spread to taste.
Use the Pultec EQ to adjust the color of the reverb (just like the old days).
Blend in a little spring reverb if you like.
Alternately, you could put the 1176LN at the end of the chain instead of the beginning... but I think putting it first gives you better control over the amount of tape saturation you want.
