A Cool Space Echo Trick !

Here's a neat trick... you can get that old-school plate reverb sound, the same way they did it in the 60's & 70's... adding a pre-delay to the plate using a tape-delay (in this case, the RE-201).

1: Create an FX send channel
2: Insert the 1176LN
3: Followed by the RE-201 in the next insert down
4: Followed by the Plate 140 in the next insert down
5: Followed by the PultecPro in the next insert down

Set the RE-201 to:
- wet only
- reverb off
- bass & treble at 12:00
- input @ 9:00
- output @ 12:00
- delay setting = first setting (lower left)
- intensity = OFF (knob fully down)

Set Plate to:
- wet only
- all EQ and filters off

Now you can adjust the pre-delay of the plate reverb using the repeat rate on the RE-201 (just like in the old days). This will give you the sound of the tape delay AND the plate (again, just like the old days).

Adjust the 1176LN to compress the input of the reverb to taste (just like the old days).

Adjust the input of the RE-201 to get the desired amount of saturation.

Choose the Plate (A, B, or C) that sounds best for your song.

Adjust the Plate damping and stereo spread to taste.

Use the Pultec EQ to adjust the color of the reverb (just like the old days).

Blend in a little spring reverb if you like.

Alternately, you could put the 1176LN at the end of the chain instead of the beginning... but I think putting it first gives you better control over the amount of tape saturation you want.

great tip Dan, I was actually trying to accomplish this and wasn't having any luck. The 1176 to begin the chain was the key that makes it work properly YAY! I also was not using an EQ at the end to damp the slap. That is VERY effective.

Thanks

I have another Space Echo trick ... Beatles-style ADT/chorus. The engineer would actually play the oscillator that controlled the tape speed, to vary the delay according to the pitch of the vocal. This, in conjunction with the natural flutter and sonic degradation of the tape machine, produced a warmer chorus sound. The Space Echo is perfect for this because it's the first plug to emulate tape WITH varispeed, and you can control how lo-fi it is.

Use it as a send effect, and insert Voxengo LatencyDelay before it, to reduce the delay of Head 1 to 0. Then automate the Repeat Rate control, with a sine, triangular, or random pattern. 0-10 ms gets you flanging, 15-30 ms gets you ADT/chorus.

If you want to get REALLY nuts, you could insert a pitch-to-MIDI or envelope-to-MIDI plug-in on the audio track, so that the pitch or envelope of the track modulates the Repeat Rate control. The Space Echo plug opens up all kinds of possibilities.

I use a MIDI pedal to control repeat rate, set the width very small and one for the instensity set full control widith. The ability to cause little cascading flangs with a few movements of my foot is sweeeeeeeet.

If you combine the intensity/reverbvol with a single pedal, you can cause some cool self oscillation tone changes.
