A8V and which audio card?

I posted this on the Cubase.net forum also, so this may be a repeat for some of you…

Well, after tracking down an Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard (hard to find), which is recommended for use with UAD-1 cards, I put my new system together. Athlon 64 X2 4800+ CPU, 2 gig ram… Everything looked good until I installed my Layla24. I did all the homework on the UAD-1 compatibility, but didn’t check thoroughly enough about the Layla24. Long story short, the A8V is not compatible with Echo cards.

So… not willing to give up my UAD-1 cards, I guess I’m in the market for a new audio interface. No more Echo cards for me. I’m leaning towards an RME card, which I know are well respected. Possibly a Multiface II or Fireface 800. Anyone using them with an Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard? I’d rather not make the same mistake twice. Anything else to watch out for regarding RME cards?

I’ll listen to any other audio card suggestions too. I want 8 in and 8 out analog, digital I/O is not a need for me right now, but I don’t mind having it. The Layla24 was a good card for me, so I want to make sure I UPgrade and don’t downgrade.

Thanks for any input.

I missed this too - after doing what I thought was thorough research for my new DAW I found out one frustrating evening that Mia simply didn't work with the A8V. Seeing as though I just need a cheap stereo card I'll probably get an Audiophile 192, unless I can stretch a little more for a Lynx L22 or something.

I feel this should be stickied somewhere, as I totally missed this incompatibility between arguably the most popular and oft-recommended UAD-1 motherboard and a popular brand of good value soundcards.

I know you're not keen on another Echo card, but does the Audiofire series have the same problem as the PCI cards? If 8/8 without digi IO is what you need, the Audiofires look very good for the price - much cheaper than a Fireface or something. Might be worth checking with Echo beforehand though  ... or not bothering with them at all.

Thanks csl for your input. I’m sorry you went through the same thing, but misery loves company I guess (I’m glad I’m not the only one).

I ordered a Fireface 800 today. I’ve read of quite a few successful setups using the A8V and the Fireface, so hopefully it will work for me too. And at the last second I threw in a third UAD-1 card. Since I’m going through all this junk to use this motherboard with its 5 PCI slots, I’m going to use then damn it!

I am using 2 x RME HDSP 9652's and a Multiface PCI in aq Magmqa chassis along with 4 x UAD-1 cards. The RME PCI cards are definitely compatible. Don't iknow about the Fireface. I've never had stellar luck with FW on a Windows platform. PCI works great.
