Acoustic Tracking ideas?

Just thought it'd be cool to start a new thread based on what you all are doing to track acoustic guitars.

For this singer/songwriter/acoustic guitar kid thing I've been doing the M/S pair. It seems to work well... not something you'd want all the time, but for something where the acoustic needs space it sounds good.

other than that it's normally a 414 around the 7th fret.

anyone else?

Yes, 414 here also! If it's more of a percussive background track though I might just go for a SM81 sometimes. For me, I found that the 414 is one of the mics that sound totally different through certain preamps. Usually with other mics through different preamps you get a certain colorchange that isn't too hard to anticipate, but my 414s sound like totally different mics, in a good way, put through a UA 2-610 vs. a ISA110 or Amek9098.

A vertical X-Y a bit out from the neck joint, angled towards the body a bit and a LDC on the lower quarter of the soundboard is my usual \"go to\" starting point.

My other go to in the past has been a single 451 aimed around the middle of the fretboard.

What do you guys prefer, larger or smaller acoustics?

I have been recently getting a nice warm big sound with a somewhat unorthodox setup.

I am using a Groove Tubes GT55 (I think) and a Crown PZM 30d into Seventh Circle A12s. The GT55 is in the conventional 12th fretish pointed near the sound hole and the crown is on the right of the player (his perspective) fairly close. This gives me fairly nice options for space and placement, and a natural sound.

that sounds cool. I always aim away from the soundhole. Otherwise the results are bit to boomy for me.

I usually go with pretty standard stuff: SDCs in X/Y, a M/S pair, or just one condenser maybe a foot back or so pointing towards the 12th fret.

Haven't had much chance to record acoustics in the past few months, but the last thing I tried was just an SM81 (like Plec mentions). Works good on rhythm tracks with some med/slow-attack compression. All this stuff is going through the pres in a Neve VR desk by the way...but unfortunately many of the channels are in desperate need of recapping.

Something I haven't really heard much about is using a single ribbon. One guitarist had a pretty decent electric-acoustic, but of course the DI signal was pretty thin sounding. I used a Royer 121 about 10\" back from the sound hole. It was actually more towards the edge of the hole, and angled slightly down. Used a 512 for this mic and it blended nice with the DI track and it really beefed up the sound. Without a DI though it might be good to have another SDC somewhere by the neck for more definition or finger noise if that's what you are going for.

I've heard that those VR's are hell on earth for tech staff. We're trying to sell one right now........ and it's collecting dust.
