Advice on EQing Sample Drums

Anyone have any advice on Sample Drums eqing? I do a lot of electronic recording, and would just like to get a better understanding on how to make everything sound even.

I have a Mac G4 733, with two UAD-1s. All suggestions will be MOST helpful. Thanks in advance!

My advice goes to take attention of the low mids.
Instead of killing a bassdrum around 200-250 Hz like in rock music, this frequency range is important for electronic music.
All my old mixes had a lack around 200-500 Hz and too much bass because I mixed with EQ ment for rock music (as learned at the sound engineer school).
In electronic music nearly everything is allowed as long it sounds good.
So don't be afraid to go to extreme EQing and have a controlling look at the spectrum with Voxengo SPAN.

Compression on sampled drums is good for coloring their envelope and transients to taste.
Sounds different than programming a new amp envelope.

That sound like pretty good stuff. I know I've had the issue of the bass drums sounding too boomy, and overpowering so I was wondering how to tame it a little by using eqs. How about lo-cut filters? Do you think this would be helpful? I'm just trying to get a better overall mix, and trying to find the best way to get a good balance between the music, and the vocals.

Thanks for your help!

hey Fingaz!

When I have a boomy kick I'll cut it at about 50hz. (If it works) Be careful of compression. It can make it muddy if it's not set right.

Also, watch out for harshness in the 12K range on some sampled cymbals and hihats. I've run in to that, as well.

Hey, check out my latest tune in the songs area!

Peace

Hey Matt!! Great to hear from you again! Thanks for the information that you left. I'll try out your suggestions, then again I ALWAYS use your suggestions. I especially like the suggestion that you sent me about vocal compressions. It made a HUGE difference in my sound with background and lead vocals. I'm sure that your suggestion with the sampled drums will always help. Yours and the previous post(s) are MOST appreciated!

thanks again!
