Advice on purchasing a PCI expansion chassis in Germany

Hi guys,

I've been doning some research trying to find a PCI expansion chassis for a reasonable price but all I can find is new-ware, like the magma chassis that goes for about $1200 - as much as my computer....

I've noticed that the boxes are nothing more than PC casings with PSUs' and the small PCI expantion board (4 to 13 slots) built in. Is it possible to get this board and the host card/cable to build an expansion box?

Any advice would be greatly appriciated.

Cheers,
DW

Right now there are several expansion chassis for auction on eBay - in Germany and europe.

However, it is possible to purchase a oem set from magma without the housing but it'll anyway be more expensive than an used chassis.

Is an old one with the grey flat 80pin cable ok for you? Or do you need pcie or xpress card support right away? If the old 80pin is ok cmlmusic has a 13Slot magma chassis for 425,-- Euro what is quite an ok price in germany.

best, robi

Hi Robi,

Thanks for the advice, I saw some of the offers on ebay but they seem to end pretty steep in price anyway. I find 425 Euros for a box (cost maybe 80 Euros with a PSU) with an empty board only holding 7 pci slots (this probably cost less than 3 Euros to make) to be outrageous in price. I keep reading about people finding used Avid Extension chassis and similar for $200 and less.

My idea was to update to a new computer and add one more UAD card to have a total of 4. Since I need a PCI slot for my soundcard and another interface I would need an expansion chassis. Right now it seems like a better idea to sell one UAD card and buy the SSL Duende, which costs as much as a new Magma chassis.... go figure....

Of course it would be great if UAD came out with the Super UAD2 card with 4 times as much power but I have the feeling this will not happen within the next year.

Thanks again, I'll keep weighing out my possibilities.

Cheers,
DW

The 200 for a magma is usually in us only, in europe they are way more expensive generally.

The cheap ones in europe usually come from uk so I would suggest you to keep an eye on ebay.co.uk
You have to search uk ebay specifically, the magmas do sometimes not appear if you do a \"europe search\" in de ebay.

[I'd love to sell my duende  but since there are no pc drivers yet I can't give it a \"before selling test\" to be sure it's still working 100% - it's standing here unused quite some time now since I don't have a mac anymore, but that has to wait for testing.]

Anyway, the \"cheap\" magmas show up from time to time.
