Allocation of Plugins & DSP power on the UAD

Running 4 cards i have noticed something that hasn't bothered me before.
If i load up 35% with various plugins on a project and add a Neve 33609 Compressor plugin afterwards the UAD's will grind to a halt at 47-50% DSP usage.

On the other hand if i start a project with putting in 4 Neve 33609 (creating 73% load), and then add other plugins afterwards i can get up to 90% before i get glitches. This must be an allocation issue reminding me of those terrible TC electronics days that i thought i left behind. What is the point in having a meter stating percentage of dsp left when what i really need is a meter and plugin-allocation control for each card.

Is there any way of controlling the allocation of plugins so they fill up the first card fist then go on to fill upp the other cards?

I am assuming that a large plugin like the Neve 33609 can not be spread over multiple cards (even though i used to think this was the case).

I'd be greatful for any information on the subject.

I'm having ther same problem. I have 3 UAD cards, each running at 40%. Even though I have plenty of DSP power left, I can't load the 33609 demo because no single card can accomodate the 70+ percent CPU required for it.

I just get the \"CPU load limit exceeded\" message, while I effectively have 1.8 UAD cards sat there doing nothing!

Some sort of automatic load balancing mechanism needs to be implemented soon! (like before my demo period runs out )

It's difficult to do this.
One 33609 will use what - 70% of one card? (I have not yet looked. In my 2 card setup I see 33% on the meter, which is misleading)
The next set of plugs loaded will go to card 2 until card 2 is also sat at 70%.
If you have 35% load on each of 3 cards, you still cannot load a 33609 as you don't have 70% free on any one card.

There is no way around this apart from using the SE version.

You can change the load balancing in Steinberg hosts (and maybe Sonar too) but I doubt this would count as anything more than a workaround.

If you switch the plugins off at the host control (note, NOT the plugin's internal on/off switch), it gets off-loaded from the card(s). This way you can load the heavy CPU plugins first and fill the gaps with the smaller CPU plugins.

Running 4 cards here.. Put the new Neve comp on the master buss - it is the only UAD plug in the project and all of it went to card 1 - 73%.. Took it off and replaced it with the SE version and it all went to card 1 - 32%..

A chainer would reduce I/O overhead, slightly improve audio quality by bypassing 32bit dither. The result would be more stability and the freeing up of some DSP.
