It will instantly depreciate the cards you already own, and it's very unlikely they will be able to cross develop for both old and new cards because...
The chances are the original HDL for the Mpact2 and the people who understand it are long gone. A new design would mean a new DSP architecture and abandoning the old one.
Putting two Mpact2 chips on a card will be an awful cludge as the PCI interface is part of the chip. It's not a normal DSP chip at all. The UAD PCIe cards have a PCIe to PCI bridge on them, which is enough of a cludge already.
Putting a few Mpact2 chips on one card is going to require an awful lot of 'glue'=latency+nightmare.
Be happy that it works and they have not fragmented their user base with incompatible designs already.
Very few DSP designs are ever really used to their fullest potential because it's more economic to move to a newer faster chip than keep optimising the code for the old one. The Mpact2 may be rather old, but they are getting a lot out of it.
Now, software versions.... that would interest me.
And double LOL@:lumphammer said:Why does anyone want UAD to bring out a new version?

You've burned me with the tech talk, however, I have 4 cards and am anxious to see the "UAD-2" because I think these guys are (contrary to what you're saying) going to do something that will work with the existing platform. Again, I'm not educated on the technical aspects of these cards, BUT - that doesn't mean I'm going to take your word for it that UA can't develop another platform that can work in addition to these cards.lumphammer said:Now, software versions.... that would interest me.
Technically speaking, everything he's done since has had less distortion, lower noise, and more neutrality, so it's not at all surprising to hear this. It just happens to be that the general public likes the character and saturation that Neve, as a technical engineer, is trying to get away from. I even see the 'silk' knob on the Portico preamp as his attempt at bridging the gap between what the public wants and the technical perfection he is working towards, and that preamp really does excel over an original 1073 at many tasks, but it still remains that his current products are very different in both performance and intention from the vintage holy grails he used to make.kellyrmartin said:Just a thought. I was under the impression that the 1081 and 1073 were during ruperts time. I heard him say in an interview that he wasnt especially impressed with where his company went after its aquisition.... The trailer for the nevana says that these plugs are endorsed by AMS-Neve , after hearing the interview with Rupert this endorsement doesent seem to hold water nearly as well.
