• Welcome to the General Discussion forum for UAD users!

Please note that this forum is user-run, although we're thrilled to have so much contribution from Drew, Will, and other UA folks!

Feel free to discuss both UAD and non-UAD related subjects!

    1) Please do not post technical issues here. Please use our UAD Support Forums instead.

    2) Please do not post complaints here. Use the Unrest Forum instead. They have no place in the the General Discussion forum.

Threads posted in the wrong forum will be moved, so if you don't see your thread here anymore, please look in the correct forum.

    Lastly, please be respectful.

Almost thought the UAD-2 was here...Nevana.

...but it's just a 2-card setup with all the Neve plugins. Is \"UAi\" something new? I don't think I've seen or read anything on that b4.

Yeah, It was a tad deceptive.. X2.. BAH...

LOL. I just knew they put 2 chips on one card with a traffic manager.. Like any other DSP chip. LOL.

8 UAD chips would be GREAT!!!

That is what you call some slick marketing boyz. Not quite putting lipstick on a pig (because the UAD is anything but a pig), but in the same ballpark IYKWIM.

Oh cmon UA.... once again such a big disappointment? It's like Commodore is selling five Commodore-64 for 2000$ these days. No advancement! It's a pity!

Quote from that Sonicstate Link:

\"Frank Massam - VP, Business Development of AMS-Neve, had this to say, \"The UAD-Nevana X2 is the next and obvious step in our partnership with Universal Audio to bring the power, sound and heritage of our classic Neve consoles to a broader audience. We are delighted with this collaboration to date and will be working with UA to further develop this exciting portfolio in the near future.”

Woah, that means more Neve plugins on the way...or a 4-card bundle, lol.

Whaaa?

Why does anyone want UAD to bring out a new version?
It will instantly depreciate the cards you already own, and it's very unlikely they will be able to cross develop for both old and new cards because...

The chances are the original HDL for the Mpact2 and the people who understand it are long gone. A new design would mean a new DSP architecture and abandoning the old one.

Putting two Mpact2 chips on a card will be an awful cludge as the PCI interface is part of the chip. It's not a normal DSP chip at all. The UAD PCIe cards have a PCIe to PCI bridge on them, which is enough of a cludge already.
Putting a few Mpact2 chips on one card is going to require an awful lot of 'glue'=latency+nightmare.

Be happy that it works and they have not fragmented their user base with incompatible designs already.
Very few DSP designs are ever really used to their fullest potential because it's more economic to move to a newer faster chip than keep optimising the code for the old one. The Mpact2 may be rather old, but they are getting a lot out of it.

Now, software versions.... that would interest me.

+1 :D ,says so good! same mind,i don't know why people want a UAD-2?if uad-2 has out,you will spend lots of money to buy the card,if UA optimising the code for mpact2 chip, and you can load more plugins on one card, you can use the money to buy plugins, why not?

You've burned me with the tech talk, however, I have 4 cards and am anxious to see the "UAD-2" because I think these guys are (contrary to what you're saying) going to do something that will work with the existing platform. Again, I'm not educated on the technical aspects of these cards, BUT - that doesn't mean I'm going to take your word for it that UA can't develop another platform that can work in addition to these cards.

If they make a Firewire device like a Duende or POCO that can load balance between the PCI/PCIe cards and the Firewire processor, hey, whatever, I'm going to be interested. I'm maxed out and a little more power for the future plugins would be coooool. Native? Please, lol.

Just a thought. I was under the impression that the 1081 and 1073 were during ruperts time. I heard him say in an interview that he wasnt especially impressed with where his company went after its aquisition.... The trailer for the nevana says that these plugs are endorsed by AMS-Neve , after hearing the interview with Rupert this endorsement doesent seem to hold water nearly as well.

Just so I am not misunderstood.... I love the UAD Neve stuff.. Its all over my mixes as of late. Just some thoughts to invoke further conversation

Technically speaking, everything he's done since has had less distortion, lower noise, and more neutrality, so it's not at all surprising to hear this. It just happens to be that the general public likes the character and saturation that Neve, as a technical engineer, is trying to get away from. I even see the 'silk' knob on the Portico preamp as his attempt at bridging the gap between what the public wants and the technical perfection he is working towards, and that preamp really does excel over an original 1073 at many tasks, but it still remains that his current products are very different in both performance and intention from the vintage holy grails he used to make.
