I just thought of something... Now this is just pure SPECULATION on my part, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. AMS-NEVE and UA have obviously partnered/collaborated on the development of the upcoming plug-ins. Usually, a partnership works both ways. I'm sure that's the case here as well.
Now, we all know that UA is going to have to port to 'something' new eventually right. After all, the Mpact2 is pretty much EOL (End of Life) so UA will have to choose a new platform soon. They've already ported to another DSP platform (Motorola) with the Pro Tools version, but we all saw how well that worked out (UA Drops TDM development). I'm sure they don't want to go through that again.
AMS-NEVE manufactures some of the most incredible, high-end Digital Consoles in the world. Anyone who works in POST will already know what I'm talking about. They are the cream of the crop IMHO. The thing that I think seperates them from the other big consoles is that it is somewhat of an open architecture. They already have a deal with Cedar who has ported their incredible (the best) restoration plug-ins to run on their consoles. AMS-NEVE has opened the architecture to other companies.
If you get a chance to visit their website, take a look at the overview for any of their digital consoles (i.e. DFC Gemini, 88D, etc.). Here is a quick excerpt for you:
High PCM sampling rates, DXD mixing and 40 bit floating point processing provide the digital route to the ultimate in mix quality. Classic Neve EQ and Dynamics plug-ins ensure that 88D retains the true character of the legendary Neve Sound..
I wonder who is making those plug-ins? The default EQ and Compressors on the Neve consoles are not 'vintage' based. They are based on the previous generation of digital consoles from AMS-NEVE. I find it intriguing that the collaboration between AMS-NEVE and UA comes so close to the release of the new consoles.
What does this have to do with the Sharc DSP? Guess what DSP's are loaded by the dozens, if not hundreds, in AMS-NEVE consoles? Yup, that's right, the Analog Devices SHARC!! Now isn't this just too much of a coincidence for it NOT to be true? I mean UA releasing the Neve plug-ins has to be more of a payoff for AMS-NEVE than just the licensing fees. And if AMS-NEVE needs plug-ins coded for their consoles, and they already have a partner in UA, why wouldn't it work both ways?
So, if UA is 'porting' the plugs to run on AMS-NEVE consoles, then they've already chosen the new plaform by default. It wouldn't make sense to port to the SHARC and then have to port to something else again.
Things that make you go 'Hmm....'
