Any thoughts on the 1081?

Hi! I´m working on UAD-1/Powercore and i`ve been waiting for an EQ for the UAD. I´m definitely not a \"golden ears\" type of person but for some reason i always end up wanting to use the Oxford instead of the UAD based EQ:s although i realize that in many cases i wouldn`t be able to detect the slightest difference (could it be all the money i spent on it?). Since i don`t do a lot of advanced mixing i often end up using very little of my UAD resources while the Powercore gets filled up. I`ve just tried the 1073 and i feel that what it does it does as good as or even better than the Oxford. My wallet is slipping out of my pocket but there`s one thing i`m wondering about: Does anybody have any thoughts on what we can expect from the 1081? Will it be better in any sense and is it therefore sensible wait and buy that one instead or is it a completely different beast?

i didn't know uad was working on a 1081. isn't the 1081 just a 1073 with added band/freq? i could be wrong.

i assumed the next neve plug would be the 33609 compressor. (or at least i'm hoping it will be)

but i am planning to get the powercore/oxford setup as well and plan to use them all.

As i understand it the bus compressor will be next and then the 1081.

No, they are different. The 1084 is basically a 1073 with switchable frequencies on the High Shelf (10k, 12k, 16k), and both a HPF and LPF. It is otherwise identical to a 1073.

The 1081 is a full 4 band EQ with MANY more frequencies than the 1073, along with selectable HPF & LPF. However, the main difference between the 1073/1084 and the 1081 is that the 1081 is NOT fully Class A. It is actually Class AB.

I'd really like to know why the hardware 1081 costs twice as much as the 1073? (By the way, to my ears the 1081 does sound twice as good as the 1073, on the \"mic pre\" part.)

I'm not totally positive about this, but I believe that the input transformer's are the same on both the 1073 and 1081. However, the main difference is on the output side. The 1073 is fully Class A biased, while the 1081 is Class AB (most of the time). Their were two output amplifiers developed for the 1081, the B338 and the B340. The B338 was Class A and the B340 was Class AB. Unfortunately, most of the ones that went into service were of the B340 variety. They also have different output transformers.

As to the cost, there is a lot more going on in the 1081 than the 1073. An extra EQ Band, High and Low EQ was switchable between shelving and peaking, both Mid-bands have Hi-Q switch, full HPF & LPF, plus additional switches for EQ, Phase, Solo, and custom options.
