I regrettably write in this section for a, in my opinion very sad, hope of setting up a 5.1 Surround with my Apollo x4 even after the updates made (even more so after the implementation of Sonarworks).
Customer support responded to me precisely like this:
"While you could, in theory use this system for a 5.1 set up, you'd only be able to control the main L/R out with the dial.
Everything else would rely on console and some complex routing set ups.
Something like the x8 or x16 would be better suited for surround set ups. I'd recommend visiting the UA forums and talking with folks there who do that kind of work regularly and how they have it set up with their Apollo systems.
This would be the same for just about any company's interfaces. Desktop interfaces are built for and designed for regular tracking and stereo monitoring use cases. As soon as you need to go to surround work, you need a higher class of interface with more i/o to be able to handle that."
I believe this is just a marketing limitation given that the physical outputs of the Apollo X4 would allow me to create a 5.1 that can be controlled directly from the card.
I don't understand why this possibility should be excluded, such as that of being able to create a quadraphonic system in the Twin, given that in this way I could make the most of the potential of the new collaboration with Sonarworks.
I sincerely hope that one day they will be able to implement this possibility given that if I had to buy another interface just for a surround system I would not buy another very expensive Apollo Rack given what the market now offers
