I ordered Logic 7.1 update as soon as it was available for ordering (well before the 29/0405. Today I got this email from apple. shouldn't they just assume that all Logic owners will want it?

Dear Apple Store Customer,

Thank you for shopping at the Apple Store.

The demand for the product you ordered has been higher than anticipated.
We are shipping as quickly as possible, but cannot meet the ship date we previously
estimated for you. We now expect to ship your order by May 9th, 2005.

Please note that product availability can change rapidly and it is possible that your
order may ship much sooner than we anticipate.

Your business is very important to us, and we apologise for any inconvenience
that this change may cause.

Once your order has dispatched, you will receive a Dispatch Notification email, which
will enable you to track your order.

Kind of Normal for Apple.

Lets say you anticipate a million buyers and 2 million buy what do you do. Most companies make that mistake.

Not everyone is a Car company in which they make more cars than they will sell so they end up giving incentives, etc......to get rid of the old models.

Too many times I see last years model with 1 mile on it sitting in the Dealers lot 7 months into the next model year.

Personally I'd do it the way Apple does it. Underestimate the need, cuz if you over estimate you end up with waste.

Just in time inventory was the best thing to ever happen to auto manufacturing.

How much does a dvd cost to manufacture or mass produce, if a DVD-R cost only £0.19 retail.

I'm sure they could recycle the DVDs instead of bining the overruns.

I'd love it if everything worked out the way it should and updates were there when expected. Giles reasoning is totally correct and also, MANY things can happen holding up releases, the printing, a bad batch of DVD's, delays in packaging artwork, shipping problems.....in the future hopefully all these kind of things will be downloadable.

Actually considering that most people have hi speed connects (of course that is an assumption) downloadable was what I was expecting as an option. Not a darn DVD purchase.

Demetrious,
I would'nt worry about that letter too much. I got one on friday morning and my update ended up shipping yesterday (mon) and mine letter said it was delayed until the may 20th.

giles11,
A 3.6Gb download is just not an option. Just because you a hi speed internet access does not mean apple wants all of the logic users clogging up their servers with with 100's of 3.9Gb downloads.

Well for you it may not be an option but for me it is an option. And Apple has tons of servers the size of the dload isnt the issue it is the bandwidth available to complete the download FAST. :)

And Apple has tons of bandwidth.

So In all aspects it is totally viable for those of us who would have preferrred to do a download verses waiting for a pkg to get here.

I think the issue is that there is still a significant amount of people out there using dialup, many of whom would scream bloody murder about not being able to download their update.....of course they could opt to purchase the DVD, and some may scream about that. Well, you see where I'm going, you can't make all the people happy no matter what you do!

please don't preach to me about the size/bandwidth......... blablabla
Have you ever download a 4GB file from ANY company for an update?
NO i did thinks so...

ok, its not an option for anyone. If it was you would have a download link. Ya I think your right Apple just wants to inconvenience you and its customers. People need to stop thinking of just themselves.

Ok, I think you have taken this somewhere it doesnt need to go.

I was merely stressing that for YOU it may not be an option but for ME it is an option. That is not a preachy statement that is a statement of position. And I hold to my position.

Getting all bent out of shape over what I feel is good for me verses what is good for you is a waste. The issue here is D feels that Apple got it wrong. PERIOD.

I feel they did a normal business move. I personally would have liked a downloadable update. Just becasue you feel it is not a Viable option for YOU is your personal issue and That is the point I was making.

Touchy people all over the world. LOL

Anyway back to the normal conversations at hand.

Hey D. The PSU in my Magma went up in flames last night. I was in the Studio smelling burnt PSU and wow. Time to get a new one.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the Power draw of all these DSP cards. LOL Prolly just a cheap PSU. I though it was my UAD cards at first cuz those things can cook.

It's not a question whether it's an option for you or not, it's not an option for Apple to have people downloading Gbs at a time.

But again that is speculation based on opinion.

We dont know what is feasible for apple as we are not the company we can only base our opinions on our experience not what Apple has said or not said.

agreed.......at some point in the not so distant future we will be seeing larger and files available for download. Think about the size of downloads that were common a couple of years ago, the size of email accounts, they've all increased exponentially in the last couple of years. Already, you can buy quite large sample libraries, in the GB's, online....so people ARE starting to do it. I guess my only point was that as companies compete with eachother, the availability of such download services are becoming not only feasable but necessary to do business; Also most national governments in the industrial world (oddly NOT the US) have a national agenda for making broadband readily available to it's populations. Buying software in a box in a store will become a thing of the past sooner than later.

It'll probably only be a 10MB updater anyways... ha ha...

MPC I have to agree with that The US is strangely lagging behind in getting boradband implemented on a national scale.

the 60;s were great for networking computers via universities and what not but yes Broad band should be the norm now.

I have had a 6.0 Mbps down connection for over 2 years now. Only because I asked the Telco what was the fastest available speed. Of course at that time they were only advertising 1.5 Down. Now they advertise 3.0 like it is the latest and greatest. LOL They already told me 8-10.0 will be available to me very soon.

I cant wait to download 1MB/ Sec at home. Now if I went to the university I can get 1 to 2MB down speeds but OC12 costs way to much right now for the home guy.

But I will be happy when they boost me to 8.0 or 10.0 :)

I didn't mean for you to think that.

anyway I do have hi speed internet access so it would be an option and wonderful if things were free, but they are not.
I think you kind oft missed the point. thats ok

I'm REALLY getting off topic here....so apologies. Currently there are some areas that are testing a new technology that has broadband traveling through the electrical lines. So, plug your computer in an electric outlet and you're connected. Of course communications (cable/telephone) are lobbying against the idea......

Hey Peter if I misunderstood you I apologize. Sometimes that is the ill of typing verse verbal communication we read into things that are not there. I apologize for being judgemental.

America Land of the MONEY. Can we just do it cuz it's a great idea. not because it will cost you a potential50 bucks per household. LOL

We are forever lobbying against losing money. Not becasue a technology is safe or unsafe. What a joke.

Funny, I got the same Apple Store e-mail as Demetrious on Tuesday, but then a nice man from TNT turned up this morning with my upgrade disk. Even if I hadn't received it today, the latest date they gave me for delivery was only Monday. I could have waited the extra three days. What's up with everyone? Logic Pro 7 not good enough for ya, huh? :D
