Basic Gate?

I'm hoping a simple gate that I can use in Console has been added somewhere I'm unaware of? At the moment I need to gate a P-90 guitar with fuzz going DI into the Fender plugin. Apollo Twin mk2.

Using instances of Vision, SSL channel or ENGL Savage etc is a waste of processor power, and usually sounds wrong too

Try the Legacy version of SSL channel. 2.8% dsp. Easy to turn everything off except the gate. Tried it with the Tweed Deluxe just now, to make sure I wasn't giving you bad advice, and it did what I asked of it. No sure what you're asking of it, so YMMV! Remember it can expand or gate.

Good luck!

I use Scheps Omni Channel by Waves for a lot of basic stuff, mostly dialogue things- has a nice expander too. Uses next to no processing and definitely none of your DSP 😉

Pretty sure Waves plugins don't work in UAD Console. ;)

Ah, you are correct. I’m in Luna all the time. Consoles look the same. Been a long day. 😅 Sorry, I got nothing for ya then. I tried 😝

Think Impurifier is trying to gate/expand his live realtime playing chain, to compensate for the noise brought up by the distortion, and possibly a noisy pickup, if I'm reading him right.

I'm going with this for now, thank you! It changes the tone sooooo slightly, I think it's the best I'm gona get in this situation lol. I've used it on drums this way before but thought it would change the tone more for guitar. It's slight, in reality.

Thanks for you help to everyone else too! Before posting I considered running Luna just for the gate. In terms of live playing and latency, it works the same as Console, do I have that right?

The Legacy version is at least pretty neutral sounding... definitely the mkii has more of a tone/mojo to it.

The mk2 is pretty great yeah. In DAW land I usually use the brainworx E or J since I can only run one instance of the UAD version on my interface. Maybe they'll port it to native soon.

+1 on the API Vision gate.
If you want to free up dsp, turn off the other sections in the ch strip and also turn off load-lock in the Apollo settings.

Yeah, the API is really good. But if you can do the SSL, I've always found them to have the best overall gates (take your pick which one)

UAD channel strips with a gate are the ticket - SSL Neve88 and API Vision mkII and legacy versions as well

Valley People Dynamite is the only dedicated noise gate UAD plugin that I know of - I find it kind of hit or miss but it's good when it works. It's available native from Softube but if you were buying you would want to get the UAD dsp version for use in console.

Also the Brainworx uad amp sims have noise gates under the hood in the fx section - you could try the same trick as with the channel strips and disable the preamp and other modules apart from the gate. Turn off the delay and speaker emulation and preamp etc then save as a preset of gate fx only.

probably a good idea to take some time to demo everything and see what works best for you - have fun

I forgot about that one! I have the RE (not using reason so can't use it right now) and that was PERFECT for a kick drum for example.

In asking the question I was meaning for use in Console only but thank you all still!

The Valley People gate is $200 atm lolllllllll

Not entirely. I do a lot of FOH work and for about a year ran Console live via my Apollo over analogue to take advantage of the realtime DSP, near-zero latency, and if the computer ever crashed, the Apollo would continue to crank audio unhindered. If you use LUNA and the system crashed it would kick over from LUNAs Console to your standalone Console which wouldn't have your own stuff loaded up, nor takes non-UAD plugs. I believe you would get some additional latency running through LUNA as well but you'd have to try it your self to see if it’s acceptable for you.

I mix in LUNA daily, never record into it so I’m sure someone here can provide finer details and latency and such. UAD did create LiveRack for this purpose but then killed it a year later. I know some full time FOH guys who are still using it.

Look into Live Professor for live purposes. Works seamlessly with your Apollo and you can load up whatever plugins you want.
