Best DSLR camera external mic options?

I have recently purchased a new camera and am setting up a cage system for video shooting. I’d like to capture some live playing in my home studio environment. It won’t be crazy loud but I would like to set up close to the drums at times and want the best sounding external mic that’s affordable. I wish I could plug my sphere LX in (that would be amazing), but I actually need it portable and mountable on the smallrig. I figured the brain trust here would have some experience with this and I’d appreciate any advice.

I've had better luck with a shotgun and bluetooth lavaliers.

Sorry, I meant a non-camera mounted shotgun. The older VideoMic I used wasn't directional enough. Hopefully the NTG is better in that regard.
