Brick-Wall Limiter!! A GOOD USE!!

Hey all,

Last night I was playing around with Blue Tubes \"Brick-Wall\". It's basically a fixed Brick-Wall. The harder you hit it, the lower the \"Wall\" becomes... When you start to hit it harder, it will go from -.4 to -.8. Pretty neat. I put it on the master bus and it robbed my mix of everything cool. :? boo oo

But when I put it on my Sub-Mix for my drums, after the F-670, it f'n killed. I like to submix my drums, through the Fairchild and adjust to taste. I like my Kick slammin so some times it will peak. After putting the B.T.’s Brick-Wall on the buss, I started pushing the F-670's output. Just a tad. Not too much... The drums literally erupted and came to life. Like a BigAss POW... I could vary the crushing quality by pushing the limits on the F-670.. AWESOME.... It never sounded harsh and the mixes integrity held up beautifully. I have tried the L1 & L2 on the drum buss, but never liked it... Nomad B.W. Limiter uses little to no CPU.

This f'n blew my mind. Even though the drums were Loud & Bang'n, they had headroom for dayzzzz

over all.. the drums sounded completely smooth, balanced and in your face. awesome! In your face! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! :lol:

Yes...!!!!!!!!! :p Are you wanting more? Did I let you down? Should I have hit CAPSLOCK?

Does my enthusiasm get in the way of any useful information?
Should I have posted " UAD-1 Sucks, I'm leaving UA!" or "Where is the UAD-2?" followed by a :evil:

Reason I posted this was because most Limiters turn my overheads into a distorted digital mess.

Sorry, I'm just having a great day...thought I'd share some info.

ha!

late,

You should meet Mrs. Blücher *THUNDER!!!!!!* *horses-wheeeheeeheheee*

Back to topic:
Good limiters are the best tool to catch those peak spikes after compression that kill digital headroom.
It works best for me with:
- Precision Multiband -> PLimiter
- LA2A -> PLimiter
- Fairchild -> PLimiter

Of course it is a CAREFUL matter of balance between slamming and transient breathing.

Hi Eurocide,

Could you go into a bit more detail about this technique of yours?

I'm really trying to bring up my mixing skills!

haha ya beat me to it. But i try to even be moderately nice when beer isn't even involved! ;)

Hey, IMD why not post some samples of your drum track with this limiter on and off? Sounds interesting.

use yousendit.com to host files. it's free and works really well.

I've never uploaded to yousendit.com, just downloaded, so I'm not sure how that works.

There must be a FAQ on the site.

Just use your favourite compressor as insert in the channel/subgroup. With slow attack times the transients stay alive but produce sometimes annoying peaks.
This is were the limiter comes into action.
It should only react at high peaks and only regulated down to -3 db.
This gives you more loudness in the sum without cranking up a brickwall limiter in the master channel itself.

(But in the end it is again only a technique to simulate analog tape saturation...)

siddhu,

I created a free account, but found nowhere to upload. hmmm...
I'm going down to my space to make some files...
gotta pick up some good 3.2% Beer on the way

S :)
It's basically the same except except you do more or less the reverse. Send it to a real e-mail address and copy the download link and paste it here.

What determines a Brick Wall Limiter? Is it a fluky characteristic of the Limiter iteself or is it a determined function at the design stage? Is it switchable or, again, is this something that can be determined at the design stage?

I take it none of the UA plugs have brick wall limiting? I really like the Waves L2... It does it VERY well.

Sorry, I'm not very technical, so if these are stupid questions please forgive my ignorance. I usually just play about, sometimes not really knowing what I'm doing, until it sounds right / good...

Kind regards,
Peter
