Console routing for outboard compressor

I currently have an X8p and an x8 with the x8p being the master.

I have an outboard compressor going from line out of 7/8 back into line in of 7-8 on the x8.

How do I virtually route things so that my kick mic, which is on channel 1 of the x8p goes through the outboard compressor so that I can record it in logic x?

Logic's I/O plugin.

Thanks but I would like to print it on the way in, I don't understand why I can't flex route between interfaces unless I am missing something?
You can Flex Route out and then back in wherever you like.

how exactly? I found this quote somewhere "Flex Routing: Inputs in Console can be directly routed (via Output Route menu) only to hardware outputs of the same unit."

Ok thanks... but again it says "Note: Inputs can only be routed to outputs of the same unit" and I am trying to do this between 2 units.

when I do exactly what is quoted within the manual, only the outputs of the selected interface is available so how do I do this across interfaces daisy chained together via thunderbolt cable (x8 and x8p)

you say "You can Flex Route out and then back in wherever you like." and this is exactly what I am trying to figure out.

That means you cannot Flex Route from unit 1 to an out on unit 2.

You don't want/need to do that. You'll come out of an out on unit 1, to the comp, then back wherever you like, even on unit 2.

Once you're out, it's all analog and you can do whatever you like.

I must be missing something very obvious and dumb but my kick drum is attached to input 1 of the x8p and my compressor is attached to input 7/8 of the x8 and output 7/8 of the x8. in this situation exactly how would I set this up?

You need to use an out on the x8P. That's the limitation. The Flex Route out MUST be on the device where the input exists.

So move the comp to outs 7-8 of the x8P.

riight Thanks heaps for the help. So as I suspected, without hard patching it, there is now way to virtually do this in software. Would there be a reason why this is not a feature this is implemented?

Correct. You have to come out analog anyway, it's all a hard patch.

latency. Sending signal off onto the TB bus would add it.

Maybe I am missing something obvious, but how can something that is being physically patched in the analog domain be done virtually in software? I mean an outboard compressor has to be hard patched, correct?

Indeed.

He has it "pre-attached" to the other unit and wants to leave it there and "send" to that insert from the other device.

A simple change in where it's hard patched and he'll be good to go.

Righto and I’m guessing there’s no way to do this via aux sends and returns either?
