Ok, so I took the new vouchers & picked up the Neve 88, (heck, only 46.00 out-of-pocket). How much DSP usage are we lookin at her? Hope it's better than the 33609.

huge difference between the two. I gave up on the 33609 cause it just crippled my 3 card system. However, I did buy the 88rs, cause I can pile them on.

now with the vouchers, I can get the 33609 for almost free, so I guess I will, but I don't know how much I'll be able to use it.

UAD IS good with the vouchers.

Ditto, the 33609 is awesome but a PIG. In it's defense though, the 33609SE is still pretty darn good, and is a nice alternative to the other comps.

The 33609 is not really meant for use in a mix environment.
More of a mastering tool - be it a mix or stems.
In these cases, you can use it properly.

I like using the 33609 (full version), as part of my mastering FX chain, when I am finalizing my stereo mixes, in Sound Forge 8. It works a treat.
As far as using the 33609 in a mix environment, I don't normally use it on tracks, but I do, as a bus compressor quite frequently (drum bus, bg vocal bus, etc.). :D

Neil -

I'm not sure I agree with this. I've seen this comp used more in mixes (and tracking) than any other application. Typically used on vocals, drum busses, mix bus, bass, etc. For surround mixes I've seen 3 of them chained together (since the hardware models can be chained so that one controls all of them).

As far as mastering, few mastering guys in NY use them (that I know of - I could be wrong)

Also - I'm not sure how a 33609 cripples a 3 card system. That should leave PLENTY of headroom to do a mix, assuming you're not using a plug-in on EVERYTHING.

Just sayin,

Matt

I agree

33609 is wonderful on drums group's and vocal tracks
btw, i don't have even one track with 33609 on master buss, only on drum group's

It's really nice on a mix bus if you only hit the compressor with about 2 db of reduction at the peaks. Otherwise you can really hear it working.

yes i know, i just don't like it on master buss anymore, since its not the fastest compressor in town, I prefer the SSL Gcomp on master buss :)

skip the compressor section, just use the limiter in fast attack mode. it's pretty fast. I like using it on drum overheads to tame snare hits.

I agree with BTLG, the 33609 is a mix-situation compressor if anything. It's awesome for most bus processing and a killer on vocal, guitar and drum tracks. I bought a real one cause I loved the plugin so much, and it's a lot more useful in the mix studio than in mastering because it's such a color box. It's like, either it fits a 2bus mix perfectly or it doesn't sound good at all IME. A Vari-MU or SSL/Smart sounds good on almost anything but that Neve style compression has a very narrow use when it comes to compressing a whole mix.
