\"Disabled Plugins\" - different buffer sizes?

I was having trouble with the err=21 disabling the uad card. The consensus here seemed to be that the 4.1 VST plugins and the Cakewalk vst wrapper weren't playing nicely together so I downloaded v4.0 of the DXi plugins.

Now I'm having issues with this 'disabled plugins' message.

I've tried adjusting the Extra Buffers in the configuration panel but I'm utterly confused as to what this all means.

My soundcard is set to a latency of 10ms.
The UAD configuration reports a Buffer Size of 480 sample, 10ms
Current Latency 1920 samples, 40ms
New Latency 1920 samples, 40ms.
Extra buffers 2

Are these latency numbers supposed to be the same?
Should I increase the latency of my sound card?
Should I add extra buffers in the UAD configuration panel, or leave them be?

Under the above settings, the project freezes if I try to run more than 1 plug in in.

If I remove the 2 extra buffers, the text of the message is
\"Sorry one or more powered plugins have been disabled.
The powered plugins are using 480 sample buffers, and a new buffer size of 600 buffers has been detected.
If you have changed your audio device settings, you will need to close & repoen the session for these settings to take effect, or you may restore your audio device settings to continue working\"

Apologies for the somewhat incoherent nature of the post above.

I think I've narrowed the problem down to looping a section of audio. When it completes the first pass and goes back to repeat the loop, that error message pops up. I remember when using the VST plugs that there would always be a glitch at the end of each loop...

Anyone else experience symptoms like this?

I have not used GT3 Pro, but I suspect it's underlying audio engine architecture is simliar to SONAR 3 or at best pre-SONAR 4.04 (last SONAR 4 update released last Fall). Earlier SONAR versions (of which Home Studio & GT Pro are derivatives) had a inherent problem with plugins that required PDC (like UAD-1 plugins) & project looping. Symptoms of this would be \"buffer error\" messages, serious gapping, loss of sync and even dropouts once you first passed the end loop point. This was fixed in SONAR 5 & the SONAR 4.04 update. The audio engine, along with the VST adapter was re-engineered to fix this among other things. You may want to contact Cakewalk and see if GT Pro 4 (if there will be one) will have the re-engineered audio engine from SONAR 4.04/SONAR 5. Or just upgrade to SONAR 5.

You should not have to touch the \"Extra Buffers\" setting in the UAD-1's Performance Meter's Configuration tab. That should always stay at it's default \"0\". In over three years, of using my UAD-1 cards, in SONAR, I have never had to touch that setting.
Your UAD-1 \"Buffer Size\" should match your audio hosts project buffer size(latency). The \"Current/New\" latency shown on the UAD-1 's Config tab, will be twice that of your project latency.

When I mix I typically have my SONAR project set @ 1024 (23.2msec)
I have a current 16 track/5 bus project using (13) UAD-1 plugins (62% DSP on 2 UAD-1 cards) and the project looping (except for a very slight glitch, at the end loop point) is flawless. No buffer error messages, out of sync tracks or dropouts.

Do the UAD-1 plugins loop better, in Project 5 2.01?

Hey Billy thanks a lot for the reply.

You're right, GT3 is based on the Sonar 3 engine. It does provide automatic delay compensation which seems to work well in most situations.

Thanks for the info on the buffers, I can leave them be which is good.

To be honest, since switching to DXI from VST all the other problems I was having have disappeared. I can live without looping when mixing, until upgrade time fixes thing hopefully. I have thought about going to Sonar, but GT3 does everything I need and i'm so used to it now. I wonder why UAD stopped doing DXI?

Haven't tried the UAD plugs in P5 yet. Haven't quite figured out how to drive that beast properly yet

This does not surprise me. Before SONAR 4, I used the UAD-1 DX versions exclusively in SONAR 3 & SONAR 2.2. I could never get the VST to work right. Once I upgraded to SONAR 4.02 and now with SONAR 5.01, I have been using the VST versions, as they perform better overall. As long as you are using GT Pro 3, I would stick with the DX versions.

The good news is the UAD-1 VST versions work pretty well with P5 2.01.
No issues with project looping.
