Extra Ram

Until recently I had 1.25 gig Ram and found that I had to adjust the Latency of the UAD cards. It was only working smoothly at 128. I have just purchased more Ram and now have 2.5 Gig Ram, and have reset the latency of my cards to 64, and is working without any glitch.

What is the relationship between RAM and UAD-1? I'm confused, I thought the UAD-1 ran totally independently of the computer's processor load. Is Phil's story a fluke, or will more RAM help me resolve some of the rendering dropouts or pops that I'm getting occasionally?

I had thought that too, but adding the RAM had an immediate impact on everything. The relationship between the CPU and the UAD cards are one thing, but the question of RAM must have its own impact. BTW the problem with the latency did not occur until I added my 2nd UAD card.

Is it that the cards dont drain on the CPU, freeing that up, but have an effect on RAM?

What are you doing when you have the dropout problems, and what software do you use?

Thanks for offering to help Phil. I'm using Logic 4.8 and an older Pentium 4 1.7ghz. I think I've only got 256k of RAM going! You dudes will probably crack up at that one. But, things actually work surprisingly well most of the time. I use the UA plugs almost exclusively, so I didn't think lack of RAM would be a problem. Glad to know throwing 50 to 100 bucks at the problem might smooth things out even more. Actually, 50 to 100 takes some time for me to save (family, etc.), so this is why I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Sounds like you could get 512MB to make quite a difference, so long as you get the right one. I was fairly happy on 1.25GB until I added my second card. Your CPU is faster than mine (I think) so you would probably get away with less than 1 GB for a while.
