Fw1884 / 3x UAD1's (in a magma 4) / SSL Duende

Have you tried separate FW interfaces, not just different ports on same interface? May not help, though, if it is a PCI-bus issue (AFAIK, fw interfaces put their traffic on the PCI-bus). One FW I/F on PCI, one on PCIe a possibility?

Good luck, would be really interesting to hear how this can work, as I have the FW-1884 myself.

Thanks for getting back UAfan. I don't quite understand what u mean. "Separate FW interfaces..."? Do u mean setting up an aggregate device (I have FF800 that I use 4 mobile recording) ? . I really don't want to remove my FW1884 from my setup. Sound-wise, the Duende is worth all this hassle, but I don't want to lose the FW1884 in order to get the Duende to work. I'm running the sessions @ 88.2Khz/24bit

Mac G5 (1st gen dual 2Ghz), 6.5 Gb Ram, Logic Pro 7.2.1. FW 1884, 3xUAD-1'sin a magma chassis, SSL Duende.

If you're running at 88.2, it may just be unstable because of the bandwidth limitations of the PCI bus. That's why I have been supporting UA's decision to go with PCIe instead of FW.

kudzu,

I'm thinking of FW-interface card(s) in the MAC, which you connect the Duende and FW-1884 to, not audio intefaces which are connected by firewire to the MAC. I'm not familiar with MAC, but I was wondering if it maybe made sense (if possible) to have the FW traffic from the two going to different interfaces on the MAC (one on-board, and one an additional PCI card?), so as not to get both competing in the same FW (MAC) interface. They both hit the internal PCI-bus though (I guess), unless you have separate PCI and PCIe busses in the MAC (as I said, I don't know MAC, so this may not be applicable).

I stripped evreything back to try and get it to work ... took me all day yesterday. It seems that with Firewire, its very important to turn on connected devices in a specific order. This is how I got it to work. Also, after some research I found out that Duende has some issues at higher sample rates !!! WFT ... under developed or what !!! Anyway, here's the order I got it to work. The FW1884 is connected to the PCI Firewire card. The Duende is connected to the Mac G5's own firewire bus.

1) Turn on Magma 4 Chassis (with 3 UAD-1's and 4 SATA HDs + PCI SATA adapter)
2) Turn on Mac G5
3) Turn on Duende
4) Turn on FE-8's (4got to mention I've got 2 FE-8s ... 8 fader expansions for FW1884 ... connect via Firewire !!!!)
5) Turn on FW1884

If I follow this excact power up proceedure, it all works. :D

I wonder why Firewire behaves like this?

UAD-1's work fine @ 88.2Khz ... so can't be bandwidth limitations ... can it ?Man Duende is driving me mad ...

Have you tested your setup at lower sample rates?

Haven't tried it at lower sample rates ... the projects I'm working on are all @ 88.2Khz so kinda need Duende to work @ 88.2 or defeats the purpose of having it !!!! But ur probably right tho, I should try a session @ 44.1, see how it goes ....
