Hey all don't know if anybody remembers but I posted here awhile ago asking for help regarding our recent G5 purchase. We had been having some major problems with it performance wise which I think have been ironed out. Here is the scoop...
Bought the single processor 1.6ghz G5 cause it's what we could afford at the time( in hind site we shouda sprung for at least the dual 1.8, oh well, live and learn ) runnin it with two motu HD192's and Cubase SX ( nuendo when we can afford it) Had tons of problem with clicks and pops and that sorta stuff. Then we got a UAD-1 card and could only use like 4 or 5 plug ins with it, total bummer, and were not talkin 5 stereo fairchilds or nigels. More like a dreamverb a cambridge and acouple 1176ers. Very dissapointing, cpu starts redlining and other crazy stuff like that. Anyways everyone I talk to says it sounds like ram related issues. We take it back to the store where we bought it and they find nothing wrong with it and blame the problems on the new motu pci-24 pci card. I don't belive them and check under the hood. I find the 2 stock 128 meg sticks and two sticks of 512... thats odd the computer says it only has 768 megs of ram in it. So I call the local mac shop and ask what up (different store than where we bought it) it took them about ten seconds to figure out that one of the 512 sticks was bad. So I take the 512 sticks back on warranty ( they came in pairs) and am waiting for the new sticks to arrive, the store was out of stock. I pretty much figure this will solve our problems. By the way this is the IMPORTANT part of the thread for other G5 owners... on all the G5's there are four slots for the ram, what I found out today is that you have to pair the inner two slots with the EXACT same kind of ram and do the same thing with the outer two slots. I guess that's why Apple tries to sell you ram in pairs. Hopefully this info helps anyone in a similar situation.
Take it eazy...
