Gating

Hi folks

Got a question about the gating that was applied to this clip here.

http://www.winksbbs.com/smf/index.php?a ... 0.0;id=484

The Gate effect that I used is from the UAD-1 card(Gate/Comp. from Nigel if I get the name right). It has a time parameter that just goes slow or fast and a threshold - that's it.
I used the fast time parameter for the lead vocal (higher one) and slow for the backing vocal. There was an undesired effect on the backing vocal, when I tried fast on it.
But I'm not sure about my ears. What do the experienced folks say. Does the gating sound ok to you? There was some(very little) bleed from the headphone that I needed to get rif of, so I can use the vocs in a short vocals only passage.

P.S.: For UAD-1 lovers, further processing was all done with UAD-1 plugs.
- LA2A for compression
- Pulteq Pro for EQ
- Plate 140 for reverb

It almost seems too fast as it is clipping a few intro transients.

Personally for vocals I perfer Waves Rvox as it is the ONLY over Easy noisegate In software.

But in the conext of a mix this might be barely noticable..... Let us hear this clip inserted in the mix......

Sadly, left this world before his time.

Why don't you just edit the files to remove the unwanted noise in the silent parts? You could add fades manually, so you can avoid that nasty gate response.

seems this is the way to go for solo vocs when no instruments are playing.

Gating of this clip is not necessary in the context of the mix. But I want to take the first half of it and play it solo / with no instruments as an intro.

Here's the clip embedded in the song, as far as it goes today. Just intro/1 verse / 1 chorus, not having put a lot of effort in to all technical details yet. Please bear that in mind when commenting the tune.

Gating is not noticable unless you super scrutinize. I had to listen to the song twice.

In the future turn down the headphone volume or use better isolated closed back headphones or tell the singer to keep the fones on.

It is a falsehood that you need to take one ear off to hear yourself. I know plenty of PRO singers who sing with both ears on and dominate a track on key/in tune with mad fire....

Another headphone trick is to reverse the phase of one of the channels...

For my 2 pence, manually gating (as AKIS suggests) is always the smoothest and most controllable option, but you have to way it up against time available...

thanks. I concluded that doing it by hand would really be the best, whenever time is available.

thanks for listening and answering. What does the word scrutinize mean?

Hope, you enjoyed listening.
