Guitar cab IR plugin to use in Luna

Hello all. What are people using?

I’m currently trying to find one that works well for me.

I have sound city studios, which is good but limited, and doesn’t have a power amp section before the cab so I can use a physical preamp. I have a couple of brainworx amp plugs that allow me to do that, but whilst these plugins sound great, there’s no editing of mic placement etc

I also have Genome, and WoS. Both sound good, but Genome (which to my ear sounds better for some reason), can’t be loaded as a mono plugin, which is annoying.

So I’m now wondering if anything else is going to do what I want it to, and wondered what you fine people use. Many thanks in advance for any advice.

Man, I wish UA would release an OX plugin… pref DSP powered… 🤣

I always just use WoS when I need this. Something else to try is a UAD amp sim and toggle the "bypass preamp" switch. Can't adjust mics but there is a good number of choices in there.

Yeah that’s essentially what I’ve been doing with the Brainworx Suhr amp UAD plugs, Sound City, and WoS. I’m looking at Tonex/celestion Speakermix etc, but I can’t actually find any info on whether you can use a mono instance of any of them 🤣 I really thought that would be the default for most. Thanks for replying buddy

Well it's easy enough to turn a mono track into a stereo one or you can just feed your mono track into a stereo bus and apply the plugin on the bus.

Yeah. That’s also what I’m doing. I normally have my rhythm guitars, recorded in mono and panned hard right and left, it’s fiddly using busses etc.

Send mono track to a bus, "export" just that bus and check the "import into session" box to automatically bring it back in as a stereo track. Delete or deactivate and hide original mono track.

I agree, just putting the plugin on a bus is fiddly because then you have two tracks to worry about. I'll do that if I only have one to worry about but if there are more it's easier to just use above export/import method.

SpeakerMix Pro is great. I prefer it over WOSIII or Genome. It has a much better GUI for speaker/cab selection and mixing multiple speakers/mics.

It does Mono, Mono>Stereo, Stereo and Dual Mono.

Sounds like it might fit the bill! I’ll search online, but do you know whether it works on Apple Silicon? It says something about M1 compatibility on the website, but nothing about M2/3. Thanks for the info bud

Boy, do I have help for you! :)

Get this, it's free (though you can donate 5 bucks)

hitshaper - true mono monitoring (free)

Make a stereo track, put this in the first slot and click the "C" for center. Then insert Genome.......BOOM! I use this all the time ;)

Works great on my MBP M2 Max.

I'm not sure this will solve the issue in LUNA. Genome can be used on a stereo track with a mono input already as you can choose the input as L,R or L/R mix. The problem is Luna doesn’t do mono>stereo so you HAVE to use a stereo track, meaning you have to pair your Apollo inputs, which wastes a channel.

Thanks for the info re speakermix. I’ll give it a go.

If Luna did mono->stereo plugins that would be a massive bonus all round really. Quite often I want a stereo verb, modulation, or delay for only one track, and sending and returning all the time means my windows get full.. and I assume… extra processing and memory are also being used with more complex routing.

THIS^^^ I really think Luna should have that. Been requesting with the suggestions :)

does no one else just duplicate the mono track and then convert the two monos to a stereo track and use the plug in on that one?

Not a bad idea, but I think what I posted is a bit easier? Maybe? I dunno.....

Yeah I’ve requested it via feedback too. I’m sure it’s on the cards at some point. It was one of those “wait… it doesn’t do that?” moments when I first started using Luna. But I’m keeping the faith for that (and other stuff)…🤞

Ythats the way i do it.

Right. I was referring to tracking in core audio mode, where using a stereo channel pairs two inputs, one of which can’t be used. For playback, there are easy workarounds. And as I mentioned, Genome allows you select the mono source of a stereo instance directly in the plugin…L, R or L/R mix. So no file duplication or special plugin needed.

While waiting for the OX plugin, you can always get an OX Stomp. That's what I did after waiting 7 years for a UAD2 OX plugin. Otherwise, the best cab sim I found so for in the UAD2 world is Ocean Way Studio's guitar cabs. That's what I used before I got the OX Stomp.
