How do I know if my Dual 2.0 G5 is an AMD 8131 machine?

Hi:

So, yeah, if the title of this post looks familiar, it's because I wrote a nearly identical post last week....before I found out that my G5 is actually a dual 2.0, not a dual 1.8 ghz machine.

A kind respondent told me that if my mobo has 4 RAM slots, I'm okay. I'm assuming that's the same for both the dual 1.8 and dual 2.0, but if anyone could confirm that, I'll feel a lot better about dropping $700.

Thanks! ~ Mike

George--
Thanks for the tip on MacTracker. I downloaded it and ran the program, and unfortunately, now I'm really confused.

MacTracker can't tell me whether I have a June '04 Mac or an Early 2005 Mac. As I understand it, the 6/04 machines had the 8131 chipset, and the Early '05 models didn't, so this looks like a crucial distinction.

I checked and made sure my machine has only 4 RAM slots--does this mean that I have a non-8131 model, as some have suggested?

Thanks to all for your help--I'm really looking forward to get started with the UAD plugs!

Go into System Profiler (Apple menu > About this Mac... > More Info )

If it is a non-8131 unit, the sales model number will be M9747LL/A.

Per Universal Audio's site:

\"If you have (or plan to have) multiple UAD-1 cards and need to upgrade to a G5, you should consider a model G5 that does not have the AMD-8131 chipset. At this writing, these models are the Single 1.8 (M9555LL/A), June 2004 Dual 1.8 (M9454LL/A), and April 2005 Dual 2.0 (M9747LL/A).\"

Information comes from here: http://www.uaudio.com/webzine/2005/august/index7.html

Hope that this helps.

Hi Scott:
Thanks for your reply. I went to the screen you talked about, but couldn't find any reference to a Sales Model number. Here's the information provided:

Hardware Overview:

Machine Name: Power Mac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac7,3
CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 3 GB
Bus Speed: 1 GHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.2.4f1
Serial Number: G85313S7RTY

Am I still not looking in the right place? I went through the rest of the System Profiler screens but couldn't find anything relevant there either.
Thanks ~ Mike B

Don't worry about it. The 'problem' is so slight that you will never notice.

Enjoy the UAD plugs.

Grrr...sorry.

You're looking in the right spot, it shows up right there near the serial number on my G4. They must have changed it on the G5.

My bad.

Hey Hey!

99% sure of this...

4 Slots in a Dual 2.0 G5 = PCI

8 Slots in a Dual 2.0 G5 = PCI-X

Jump in, the water's fine.

Okay, finally, through a combination of research, the UA webzine and the thoughtful help of people on this forum, I've answered my question and, more importantly, gone ahead and bought the Flexi Pak. Looking forward to getting started with these plugs--thanks so much for your help!
