How to make silent my AVID 7-slot chassis?

Hi

I have an AVID 7-Slot extender, 4 UADs and 1 Poco MKI and 1 Poco MKII.
So far no problems, first slot places just fine, because I saw
once a post from AKIS (thanks) how the slots are sharing irq's.
Also I had the known initialization problems with the Poco MK1 in MOBO,
but with the extender no more any issue at booting.

I want to make silent this extender.
Actually there are 3 fans on front and a plate with 2 fans above the
pci cards. Further also the power supply is noisy.

Any suggestions about:

1. replace with which model of fanless power supply?
I read in some posts that there are problems with some newer
power supplies concering the connectors.

2. Is it needed to keep the fans on the plate above the cards?
If not, install the plate anyway or let away?

3. I read about the loadres 5V, and that I can install any useless drive
instead. Is it needed by the configuration of cards which are sitting in
my Avid extender?
First I have also installed the RME PCI card of my HDSP in the chassis,
but no way to boot up the PC, only as soon as I disconnected
the cable to the breakout box the PC start up, is this an issue
in case of missing resistor?
Well actaully the RME PCI is back in MOBO without any problems.

Thanks
Martin

Thank you very much for your reply.
Do you think Magma will give me an answer?
Once I were asking them concerning the flat cable,
and their reply was very disapointed.
They said, this extender is no more supported by them
and that they will also not give me any specification
of the cable.
Finally I had to make the cable by myself, a friend
who has a electronic company helped me to source
the connectors. Therefore I think they will not answer
which PSU will works.
Well I will try, perhaps they become more friendly in 2007.

Do you have any comment concerning the resistor, if it
is needed in my case?

Thanks
Martin

AFAIK, it's required for your model - an old HD should do fine.

So I will try to get an answer from Magma
as also I will install an old HD.

Here's what I did to silence my Magma ...

I had laying around in my closet a QTechnology 300w silent PSU that I had bought from quietpcusa.com several years ago.

Then I went out and bought two Antec TriCool 92mm Double Ball Bearing fans that run at 14.6db when on the lowest speed.

The difference is night and day. What used to be an audible whirlwind of three whooshing fans and a buzzing PSU is now a quiet whisper.

If you really want to go the extra mile Quietpcusa.com also sells acoustic foam for the inside of a case.

Hello

Now I have a silent magma, I have used:

1 x Seasonic S12-430HT
3 x Noiseblocker SE1 92x92x25

additionlly I have mounted an old 1.2 GB HD

The fans are now at full speed 1'500,
they came with potentiometers to lower
the speed and noise, but also at full speed
the noise level is low.

All works perfectly so far.

Are case fans really necessary to cool a few UAD-1 cards? I'm currently just using an S12 PSU, relying on that to shift a little air. My cards are still quite cool, warm to the touch, but not blisteringly hot as they were in a case full of PC components. 3 case fans sounds a bit OTT, no?

I'm running 4 UAD cards in a 7-slot magma... I just unpluged the first day all the fans, and replaced the standard PSU by a fanless one. NO noise, and no problem.

I have 3 very quiet fans in my Magma with 4xUAD-1's and 3xPoCo mkII's, but mostly for my peace of mind, as the PSU is fanless. I just had some problems with the CPU temperature on my DAW, though, where high temperatures caused system crashes, so I think some attention should be paid to keep your system at optimum temperature. As for whether 3 case fans are OTT, I have 7 (quiet ones) on my DAW...
