Hub with Apollo?

Anyone using a hub with their Apollo (thunderbolt 2, I believe)?
I ask because apparently a root cause of my computer restarting is that I have the Apollo plugged into an OWC hub and according to UA customer service you shouldn't do that.
However, some people over in this thread are using a hub (CalDigit TB3 Plus keeps popping up) and having no issues.
Seems to be okay when using a THUNDERBOLT hub but not okay when using a USB-C hub.
Why would this matter anyway?

I don't have an answer for you but my computer restarts with the Apollo plugged in straight. I have to turn off the Apollo before putting my computer to sleep. If I put it to sleep with the Apollo on it restarts.

They misspoke. The hub they linked to is a TB hub.
