So now that the initial hype is past, is everyone still digging the UAD 1073?

yeh its got classic eq curves that are idiot proof and stand the test of time, of course people are going to like it. however, before the release i was hoping for more of the transformer and vintage crunch simulation that i dont feel is its strong point.

it sounds super sweet when using to boost mid frequencies (and highs)

it's a bit limited, being paragraphic, but if it falls around where i want to boost, it's my go-to

That's how I feel. I really like it---especially compared with Pultec. It's great, but I wish it gave -more- of what it gives. I'm holding out for the compressor---my -hope- is that it will give me something I can strap on the master buss a la McDSP.

I understand your hope. However, to my own concern, I like it in that way exactly because it don't do that. I'm using mainly a Great River ME-1NV as preamp and which is already a colored preamp and the 1073 is the perfect addon to it since I don't loose or over color his sound.

It's beautifully smooth - especially in the high end. That 12KHz shelf must be a really shallow slope though, as it is having a beneficial effect even on much lower frequencies.
Beautiful.

colortone ain't no McDSP by any stretch of the imagination
Agreed. I actually like Colortone a lot, but to me, it basically sounds like what it is... a filter. If I could use an analogy, it's like using a 'tube' distortion pedal on a guitar vs. a tube -amp-. The pedal sounds great for what it does, but it ain't the same thing as the -amp-.

When I heard it, McDSP kinda/sorta sounded like the tube amp (or the real SSL buss comp) and Colortone, the pedal 'tube simulator'.

Or something like that.

You really need to experiment with all the IR's in Colortone before you can really come to these conclusions...according to the Tritone guy, Damon, a simple test reveals that the McDSP isn't doing anything in terms of harmonic distortion saturation - not even close...He admits that it is one helluva of a fancy compressor though...

These are kinda two different beasts...anyhoo, I am getting wicked smoothness mxing through one of the Ampex IR's fed into a little light Elephant on the master buss...Even if McDSP was out for windows, $500US price tag is wayyyy too steep..

yeah colortone is just eq+harmonic distortion. I bought this thing myself and loved it in the beginning, now I never use it anymore, too much of a cpu hog for what it does. McDSP analog is pretty cool, very slick little plugin, but a bit overhyped too.

I like the sound, for sure it doesn't sound exactly like the real thing, but then again...it didn't cost me 4 grand either.

I have a 1073 in my studio for a while, and the EQ is not what I am impressed with, it's the pre. The EQ is ok, I like the Prec EQ a lot better.
