Is the UAD-1 PCI on it's way out?

From what I've gotten from looking at the UA site, it appears that the PCI version is still being sold, and will continue to be sold for the time being. I read somewhere on the UA site that PCI-e is not going to replace PCI in motherboards for at least a couple of years and that we're going to be seeing motherboards with both PCI and PCI-e slots at least for the near future, but in print ads, UA is only showing the PCI-e version.

I'm considering buying another PCI card for my Magma chassis but am not sure if I should wait for a \"clearance\" sale.

PCI itself is on the way out. I wouldn't be too surprised if within 18-24 months it became difficult to buy a new motherboard with PCI slots.

UA doesn't generally \"clearance sale\" things. In the cases of the Studio Pak, 2192, & 2108, UA quietly phased them out without doing anything extravagant to EOL them. We bought out the entire last stock of Studio Pak's & paid full price for every one of them.

The 2192 is no more? I'm a little surprised. I'll scrub it off my provisional upgrade path list. Maybe a newer version is coming out?

Clearance prices? Ebay 6 months to a year from now. My prediction? Around $100 with stock plugs. I just set a reminder in Outlook to look back here in 6 months to see if my prediction was correct.

Well, I just had a chat today with an IT friend of mine and he gave me a pretty good tip, he said \"Go check newegg.com and see their top-selling motherboards, you can always see the selling trends on a site like that.\"

I asked him to spare me a trip to newegg and to tell me what he thought. He said that according to all his IT friends, the cool thing to look for in a mobo these days is a combination of PCI and PCI-e, he said there are too many existing peripherals that are PCI that are out there and that it's going to be pretty tough to get everyone to ditch their PCI cards (such as sound cards, modems, etc.)

When I meant a \"clearance\" type of sale, I was thinking about places like Guitar Center (retailers); I'm sure UA and many manufacturers don't tell their resellers things like \"hey, btw - we're going to be discontinuing this soon, how many did u want to order for your store!?\"

2192 is still alive and well, my rep at sweetwater was wondering where you got the idea it's been discontinued?

Actually, that's usually how the clearance sales happen, manufacturers tell us what products they're "End Of Life'ing" & sell them to us for greatly discounted prices. Retailers then pass those discounts on to the customers. There are odd times where a retailer is just getting rid of excess or old stock but the discounts aren't as good then (simply because the margin isn't very large to begin with).

In the case of the Studio Pak, UA wisely recognized that although they're no longer interested in producing it, it's still a viable product & there's no need to clear it out. Some places are discounting it a wee bit ($100 off in our case, pretty small considering the normal price) but Zzounds, et al, still have it for full price. I imagine this trend will continue with all UA products in the future.

I must have heard it from a customer since we don't carry it. Sorry for the mistake.

Thanks for the insight! I always thought retailers were sort of stuck with things that a manufacturer all of a sudden discontinued.

You guys are doing a bit of a 'Chicken Little' sort of thing here. Yes, I think we will see less and less PCI slots in the months and *YEARS* to come... but really... There are a LOT fo legacy devices, some HIGHLY specialized like the UAD1 that are in PCI format.

You gotta remember that there are MANY MANY businesses that run specialized machines with odd hardware that they are not going to want to replace. Perhaps they CANT replace them.

And even, as in the case of the UAD1, when there is a PCIe (or whatever) option availble do you thing companies with highly specialized PCI cards in service are going to want to upgrade both the motherboard AND the card?

Some will. Just as some of us will want to do this with the UAD1.

But in the end there will be at least one PCI slot on MANY new motherboards for years.

So get an expansion chassis. Or upgrade to PCIe. It won't really matter for years to come. And if you get the chassis you can buy a PCIe card to connect to it when you want that whiz-bank MB that doesn't have a PCI slot (next year??? or 2008??)

Here are some motherboards available now that have (gasp) ISA slots:
http://www.adek.com/ATX-motherboards.htm
http://www.supermicro.com/products/moth ... /P4SCA.cfm
http://www.soyogroup.com/products/proddesc.php?id=335

I would be willing to guess there are users on this forum who have never seen an ISA slot or card. I would be willing to guess that there are users on this forum that haven't even really heard of them. ;)

PCI will be with us for a while longer.

Those on the bleeding edge will throw away (EBAY!!) their PCI cards to upgrade. Those who are joining the fold will just buy PCIe cards...

PCI on the way out... yup... So is the human race. In fact we may be gone before PCI motherboards are. ;)
