I just recieved all the files today of a mix project I'm starting in a couple of weeks. First, I just like to get all the faders set up to a decent level for all the songs and just do a little quick \"fix\" here and there on tracks that I know are going to need it no matter what. I then burn all the songs to CD and listen to it whenever I'm driving just to get a feel for the songs and the album before I'm actually in there mixing the thing.

So of course, the Neve strip just worked so great for doing all those little fixes and tryouts right away, like I would've done on a console. I'm just gonna post a sample with rough settings so you guys get to hear som raw fun Neve love!

I think I'm gong to post a blind-test as soon as I'm able too. Like just a raw mix with 30 channels or so, faders up only. One with just that mixed down and then one with the channelstrip on every channel and the master bus without doing anything,, just being in the chain!! 8)

Sorry to post again so soon in the same thread... but I am bursting here

Just been making a new track with my obligatory obscenely low, obscenely fat synthetic bass  The 88RS has done nothing but WONDERS. I have tried a few other combinations and I absolutely cannot, cannot believe how well it suits things like this. I actually - get this - turned down the 1073. Yep. I never thought I'd see the day.

The 88's 'modern' sound just works stupendously well on stuff like this. I don't like top end in my bass (I make drum and bass, not drum and mid :D ), maybe just a little click for definition. There's nothing worse than that cheap crap fizzy distortion you get of crap plugin compressors, even with what should be the 'right' release time, I HATE it (I'm looking at you, Ultrafunk!!). Just piling on the compression - up to 20dB or more - with the 88 was sounding extremely fat and nice. Then I thought that with the way this bass sound moves (it comes back at you, if you get me), perhaps a hard knee would allow the lower signal through a bit better and just carve off the top nicely. So I clicked the HN button.

And HO LEE SHEEUT  The bass just leapt right up into my face!! It just gained a whole extra dimension, but without any of that scabby fizz skank.

I'm only gutted I can't put across how unfeasibly happy it makes someone like me. I've stopped my creative flow just to post what probably looks like a total fanboy post, that is how impressed I am. Unbelievable.

I should qualify that now, after a day or two - I have taken it out of one or two projects. It seems over a certain number of tracks it gets a bit much and things get a little woolly - but that could well be because most of those tracks are now 88RS'ed

FWIW I have a 'blank' Pultec in my master out in my project template, in a 'set it and forget it' way :)

This reminds me, I wanted to ask - what's in the output of the full hardware console? Does it have one of these babies, or something else/nothing etc..?

This maybe a nice idea, although usual procedure would be to use it on the channels not the master.

But today I experienced a comparable effect, when the 88RS was layed on 3 tracks. First I wanted to compress drums and bass a little bit, but decided to go on with nearly no compression.
Funny was, that I liked it much more to lift the track levels with the compressor gain or the output of the Neve channelstrip than with the Cubase mixer

Don´t know if it´s voodoo and I didn´t make a proper A/B test, but working that way was funny.
