Logic&UAD processor usage question

hello everybody,

I began to process&mix some of my stuff just to get to know the uad-plugs and how they deal with certain signals. Besides that I also wanted to see when I reach the point that I max out the uad-1.

Anyway, this track contains about 7 tracks of drum-mics, a bass and a wurlitzer, so no big deal, because I have none other than uad-plugs running.

Watching my uad-app I saw that I was getting near 70% of processor usage BUT when I looked to Logic´s cpu-meter, I realized that the G4 was nearly maxed out :? ...so my plans to free my computer for the use of synths&samplers is in danger..

Is this normal, or do I have some false settings somewhere?
why is my G4 nearly maxed out, although I´m using uad-plugins only?

thx for your comments,
peace, moritz :)

Hi Mortiz,
What is the hardware buffer you currently have set? (At lower hardware buffers you will see more host load per UAD-1 plugin). I would recommend something like 1024 when you start mixing. Also I noticed you have 2 soundcards listed, are you using them simultaneously? If so, if you use just 1 is your host load any different? You can also test (if you are using a 44.1 sample rate) by switching to built-in audio (Mac AV) and see if your host load is any different. If it was a matter of overhead from the soundcard drivers, this would show that. Also, if you are on a G4, make sure you *do not* have AMD-8131 mode checked in your UAD-1 Meter configuration menu.

hi james,

so now you know who I am! :)

actually my RME ADI-8 pro isn´t a 2nd soundcard it´s just an additional I/O converter connected via ADAT I/O..

I´ll check all things you´ve mentioned and again..I can´t believe how fast you react on questions..big thumbs up&thx!

8)

cheers, moritz :)

hmm, I can´t find any AMD-8131 mode checkbox in my config-menu..

Hardware buffer is set to large and I tried to switch to MacAV to check what happens but unfortunately I got a \"try to save your song\"

..I´ll keep on tweaking..

Sorry sometimes my mind starts to fade if I haven't had lunch :p That is something only available in OS X.

Also set the driver latency to a higher number, this would effect primarily \"live tracks\" ones selected in the mixer or arrange.

:D no prob

shure, higher latency-settings will give me an unuseable situation with all my hardware synths connected to logic´s live inputs when working and I more and more realize that my current computer can´t cope with everything I need at the same time..what means composing&working on tracks with low latency without heavy uad use and mixing with high latency setting(having all my ext. tracked) to gain the best out of the uad and the g4

somehow I thought, everythings stays the same with my g4 processor usage and the uad pluggies get calculated by its own processor only...but it isn´t as simple as that it seems..

cheers, moritz :)
