Luna Console Emulation and Preamp Decisions

Hi All.

I have been watching Office hours with the UA crew and finding it informative, and actually quite relaxing to watch, so firstly thanks guys!
However I have a question, as I have spent so much money with UA and maybe I can save some.

So... Luna has an end to end emlation of the API console, but everyone talks about the Neve preamps. I have listened to both preamps and defo think the neve is more 'gooey' or something like that. I am starting a large Hard Rock/Metal project of taking my 2010 album and remixing and am very excited.
So should I go with stock API or should I go with Neve.
Will there be really that much of a difference by the end of the project for me to justify the expense?

Yes I understand there are differences in preamps.
I am really wondering if i should get into the full API workflow, or muck it up at the start with Neve.
I have limited time and want to start off on the right foot.
I am not new to this, but have never had Neve or API consoles or the money to dream obout them.

Btw UA your selling strategy is a real doozey.
1. Bought 1176 for £30 from Plugin Boutique
2. Got free LA2A
Now I was hooked
3. Bought 4 plugins for £250 from Plugin Boutique
4. Oh no I found Luna - another £199
Needde Apollo X8 with free mic soooo bad
5. Another £2000 gone (dont tell my wife)

Now you see my problem, tell me i dont need a neve preamp please.
Thanks in advance!

You already know the answer to this. It's okay, everyone's doing it.....

The usual advice is "track with Neve, mix with SSL (or API)". API is pretty clean, so if you want clean, track & mix with that. If you want lots of analog character, get the Neve. I don't think you'll regret that purchase :)

1073/1084 no contest as the Preamp is just, a preamp... and a lot of the glory of the 1073/84 is the EQ
+1
You can also disable the EQ sections on the 84 and the 73 and just use the pre.

If I were to spend should it be the preamp or 1073/1084
I would go for the 1073 as you'll get the Native version as well then. The 1084 doesn't have a native version.

Good point. I prefer the HPF frequencies in the '73 as well. These things use a lot of DSP so having the native version could be quite important.

Interesting. But £75 for the pre vs £150. The API has a nice eq. Is it a must have? I might pull the trigger but please convince me. My wallet is wearing thin

You can demo it and decide for yourself. My policy is not to purchase under duress - only buy when its something I need/want.

If you go Neve then definitely get the 1073 so you can track with it in the Unison slot and mix with the native version because the DSP version takes a LOT of your Apollo's DSP. You may want to consider the Neve compressors collection as well so you have a full Neve experience with the preamp, EQ, comps and summing.

The API is a great choice too but it definitely has a different sound than the Neve. Hard rock as you describe your music can go either way.

You really can't lose here. Demo them both and mix a song with each. Export and A/B listen then decide.

Hi Drew, We have spoken on this forum before, and I think you and the otehrs have got it right. I am only 2 months into the UA thing, and it feels like a family, or a movement, like I am part of something. That makes all the difference. I am just about to start a full mix of my Album on Luna and learn along the way. I have used Cubase since 1999 and moved to Logic last year as my writing partner uses it. I find logic uninspiring athough Drummer is handy. Luna was a revelation. Making music at home is enjoyable again. The only thing stopping me using it fully oi no multitrack drums. That is a clincher. Keep up the good work hope to see that soon!

Difficult. I want my project to be the best it can be. Recorded it in 2007 and it has underachieved ever since!

Are you sure there is a native version. I could not find it!
Yes but you can only get it by itself if you subscribe to Spark. But, if you buy the DSP version, you will also have the native version in your UA Connect.

EDIT: Heh... Nyoak beat my by about two seconds.
