I don’t think that the newer mac’s OS supports firewire. there is a cutoff in where the FW apollos work..you might need to check with apple to see when they stopped supporting FW..

Yes, I thought there was a problem with Mac OS compatibility but couldn't find the info. That article mentions:

  • UA FireWire products are incompatible with macOS Big Sur and later.
  • IMPORTANT: macOS requires manual configuration steps to fully enable UAD software.
....followed by different pages describing how to make it work in your particular pre-Big Sur operating sytem.

Apple has abandoned FireWire starting with Big Sur and beyond. If your Mini is pre-Big Sur and is Intel-based then you can use them without any problems. Otherwise, sorry nope it can't be done.

It's a bummer I know... I've got one collecting dust. I'm about to just give it to a friend who is still running an Apollo Twin on an old Trash Can Mac.

It would make good sense to find an older FireWire Mac with a stable version of macOS, connect a UA FireWire Apollo and dedicate it to recording only. Probably run for decades and would cost almost nothing.
