master buss compressor

Pardon covering the same ground twice, but nearly every thread I've read about the 33609 has a number of people bitching about it in one way or another. That just turns me off.

So, my question is thus. Lately I have been putting the Fairchild on the master bus, but real small. I set the threshold to only between 1 & 2 and it seems to keep unruly peaks under control only not as well as the Plim, but the Plim blurrs out the low end. I like my kicks to be well defined and very noticable. Anyhow.

How does the Neve buss comp compare? For some reason I cannot get the demo's to work at all for any of the Neve plugs or obviously I would just listen. I gotten a reset from tech support too but no dice there.

I like the Fairchild just fine, but I would like some variety of course. Something that's not too fast or too hard. Just a little mmmm to hold the ship together.

What say you all?

I'm glad you brought this up.

I used to not like the 33609.. I was totally unimpressed.
After learning how to use it, I have changed my mind. In a very big way.
The NEVE 33609 is a better Bus Comp than the Fairchild, IMHO.
Subtlety seems to be the key...
You can blast and blast away at the Fairchild and render some killer, musical results. Same with the 1176LN.
The 33609 is a \"Gentle Giant\".. It seems the more headroom you leave, the better your results. I really couldn't get a good sound out of it, placing it on the buss, reducing any more than 1-2db max. 3:1 ratio adjusting the Threshold until I get -1 to -2 (no make up gain).

By doing this I can hear the clean character and musical qualities that are characteristic of NEVE gear.

I haven't gone as far as using it on single instruments, but feel that it might be excellent for bass guitar.

People asking for a Tape Emu, should try this Comp like I do...
It just tightens the whole mix up, just right.

33609, IMHO, sounded better than the SSL Waves Comp. Closer to \"Analogue\"

33609 sound SOLID!

Just be nice to it.......

Great advice in that post, imd. Leaving plenty of headroom is not only the key to the 33609, but it's the key to digital recording altogether.

Hey thanx...

The 33609 seems like a Boxer with a big right hook... or a home run hitter.

Just a little on the Buss, goes a long way.

Any advice on using the 33609 on Single instrumens?

No doubt my friend

imdrecordings: I demo the 33609 since several days and it began to make me more fun than UAD PrecMB.

So, I don't know nothing about the 33609. Sure, I read the manual, the threads.

I don't know what is meant with headroom and so. Please, can you give some advice to start on main bus with it, to get the clean character and musical qualities that are characteristic of NEVE gear on my mixes?

Later.

To be honest, I find the Neve33609 to be the BEST compressor UA ever made for UAD, and I realy mean it!, the sound is so freakin good on almost everything, I find it to be very good on drums, vocal, piano and master buss but i'm sure it will sound good on almost any thing...

i'll quate imdrecordings on this:

Bingo!

I also like the 1176 on \"Shift mode\"
\"Shift mode\" - hold Shift key on your keyborad and click the ratio on the 1176 and its also works with the SE...I just love it 8)

That's usually called the 'all-button mode'. :)

Yep, or \"nuke-mode\" if you're a hip, happening, A-Zum, dude-ish writer for the Fitzpatrick product catalogue.
(Fitzpatrick=UA's distrubitor in Sweden.)

33609 as a master buss compressor. I find it likes music with lots of \"space\". i.e., Pop, R&B, HipHop, and other rhythmic and groove heavy music. It imparts a \"tight\" and \"hit you in the chest\" sound to this kind of music.

But, I find that rock/punk/metal with little \"space\"... i.e., slamming guitars, splashy cymbals, wall of sound music, it doesn't work as well. For that kind of stuff... the best master-buss compressor I've used is Voxengo Polysquasher.

Sorry imdrecordings but i have to disagree.. The waves ssl is THE buss compressor. You can get amazing result with very few tweaks.. Not true with the 33609..

dusty -

I dunno, to each his own. 33609 does great things to my mixes when I tap it at 1.5 - 2db of reduction on a master buss...

not to discredit an SSL buss comp, I love those too.

Another one for ya Matt.
On the mix buss
The old 4db of compression with the slowest release, ratio 1.5 or 2 headroom switch at 14.
Sounds just like my Manley Vari-Mu, grabbing the mix! :D
SWEET.

-S-

I just can't really get anything good out of the Mixbuss with the SSL Waves.
YMMV
