Mastering

I have pro tools LE. I was told that to make my cds sound better I need some mastering software like Peak. First question) has anyone used peak?
Second Question) Do I need it?

Impossible to answer your questions without more detail about your music or what it lacks in detail. Beside that I'm not sure if \"Peak\" is a plugin or if you just mean you have to increase overall volume. You might want to have look into the new \"Precision Limiter\" plugin from UA then.

peak is a mastering software. After you bounce a sessions to disk it brings it up in peak on two tracks and it equalizes the levels better and you can put compressors and stuff on it.

Peak is am individual program for working with stereo files. It is very detailed and you can use third party plugs in it just like Logic, Nuendo, etc. Personally, I just do all my own mastering inside the program I record. (Logic) It comes down to how much you want to manipulate the files, or if you are working with video wich is very strong in peak. i would save your money and get the mastering plugs you can and use them in your existing software,

OR.......get Daved from Eastgate Studio to do the mastering for you online. He is very good and a nice guy to boot! Check him out at http://www.theeastgate.net

John,

If you look at the new Precision Limiter it says Mastering Series on it. we can only assume this is the first of several! Let's hope. the PL rocks!

how's the single going? The CD?

To be realistic all the above is true, But you don't want to master in the same room, speakers ect. as you are tracking in. You will just get more of the same. Send it out or find another room setup.

Okay..............I'M BLIND!!! I didn't really notice that little bit of information on the PL. Then again, I haven't purchased it yet either. LOL!!

Single is going GREAT! Finishing up on the project. Thanks for asking.

Basically, Peak is a mono/stereo wave editor similar to Sound Forge. I've used Peak a little bit, but am so used to SF it's hard to say which would be better for mastering projects. I'd say, though, that a good set of ears is probably more important than your choice of software.

revelation - who are you saying this to?

if it is a general statement, as for myself, i personally won't touch anything by waves ever again. one of their demos took down my daw years back. once bitten, twice shy. it was their copy protection that did it, but any business that harms possible users is simply stupid.

I dont know peak at all but I have used or tried many mastering labs
even used gateway (Bob Ludwig) up in Maine and with alot of trial and error I came up with my own Master and was the most happy with it.

I used a number of monitors both pro and consumer products to
elvaluate the sound. In the end it was worth it but usually having
another set of ears will be the right thing to do.

I maybe the exception on this!

I always thought it would be really cool to be able to get unmastered versions of some of your favorite songs, to use as a mix reference to get a better feel of what a mix is \"supposed\" to sound like before it gets squashed in mastering, and to get some insight into what the mastering engineers are doing (and not doing).
