MCI JH636 Console

Anyone have any experience with the MCI JH636?

I've got a tracking session this weekend at this place, and I've got the \"first time in a new room\" jitters -

http://www.vibromonk.com

Seems like a cool, vibey place, just wondering how the console pre's stand up. I don't want to be the d-bag who rolls into the studio with a bunch of outboard pre's for a tracking date (they actually seem to have some pretty cool stuff... none of which I'm familiar with using).

The mic selection is less than stellar, but hey for $400 a day what do you want, right (I think I've been spoiled by the redonkulous mic selection at work) ? I might be able to borrow some m88's from a buddy for snare/toms.... while I'm at it, anyone have any experience with some of those AKG's they've listed?

Thanks in advance -

Matt

Hey Matt...
Just an observation, but.... how are they clocking the converters...?
I see the Apogee ad/da 16s and an RME, but only the sound card and no outboard clock.

Looks like a cool, funky place... Sure wish they had 2-Coles instead of 1.

I've used that board once... It was very, very quite.. Almost no noice. Smooth as a muthafuka. Pretty straight up.... The one I used had a weird automation system, with a big'ol slider.... really hi-fi sounding.

That's one of the older MCIs \"Big Brown\" prettty staright forward, as long as they have that TT bay wired up right.

Should be a fun one for ya.

Clocking - valid question. I'll have to bring that up when I talk to them, I have a feeling I'm not going to like the answer (I've already been told that they don't allow for any setup time which is kind of a turn off... )

I thought the 1 coles was kind of odd too. Luckily we're only looking to keep the drums/bass takes, so I'll bring an extra 414 and those three mics will be my primary drum mics.

I'd actually try to bring the gig in to work on the family discount if we weren't so booked (which is a good thing!)

I used to own a 424. Perhaps that was of a different series but it wasn't that quiet of a board nor particularly great sounding all around, probably worth using over M88's but not over a good lunch box.

I was referring to the Beyer M88 mics. Thanks for the input tho.

I talked to the guy that runs the place on the phone today. Nice enough guy, talked him into some setup time (was easy enough to do). Funny though, I mentioned that I would just use the console pre's to keep things consistent and was told 'uhhh..... that console is on it's way out really'. Again, nice enough guy, but whatever happened to standards? Is it ethical to charge someone for something that doesn't work right?

Scott- to answer your question about the clocking - they do it internally. I'm thinking of borrowing an antelope clock from a buddy of mine.

This ought to be an experience. I haven't tracked a band in someone else's room in a few years really, most of my work has been guerrilla style (take a computer, some mic pres, some headphones and go for it) or at work on the family discount.
