Me and My Radio....

I finally finished a complete song. It's been a while. I programmed the drums hit for hit. I think I'm getting a bit better at this, but some of the tom fills sound a bit wierd. Anyway if anyone has the time, let me know what you think.

btw I normally use Sonar, but on this song I tried Cubase, which was like working with a goverment agency. Sonar is so much more fluid and easy to use. I also used the precision limiter to master (first time) I love that thing! I'm going to try the plate next.

thanks

@me and my radio
I've been walking downtown
just me and my radio
I took a bus to a connection
but I guess that my connection
was wrong
It's just me and my radio
walkin all alone

I've been lookin at the sunset
and counting all the stars appear
I took a ride on a freight train
I listened to my left brain
(nice to meet u)

It's just me and my radio
It's just me and my radio
were walkin all alone

My daddy's gonna kill me
when I finally get home
I feel just like a vegetable
with all this dirt in my shoes

It's just me and my radio
walking all alone
Me and my radio...
I can't turn it off

Sonics sound great, that was Cubase...SX? The drums sound nice and punchy...very authentic, nice tone.

Good job!

What's your set-up..if you care to share it?

Yes it was Cubase SX.

The drums actually consist of four different snare samples and three different Kick samples. I do all my drum programming in ACID. it can become very tedious, but the more you do it the easier it gets. It probably took me an 1.5-2 hours to do the drums. A year earlier it would have taken me a week.

I used a CAD E-200 running through a FMR audio RNP (preamp) on the vocals. Bass is direct and the guitar is PodXT -- I use a Tascam DM24 Mixer. I have two sets of of monitors (Audix a1's and JBL 6208's) Once the mix sounds good on both sets and on the headphones, I know I'm done. I also have an air matress which can be moved around easily for conserved space. lol Sad but true.

Thanks for the comments and the listen.

Toystein,

I think your getting a great sound \"pro quality,\" Did you mix in the box or thru the DM24?

Can you direct me where to get decent drum samples?

Can I ask why you choose to program your drums in Acid, and not the Cubase SX drum editor. I've always found the drum editor it to be more than adaquate. Maybe im missing something?

I do all my mixing in the box. Yes I know the DM24 is a bit overkill for my needs, but I had other intentions before I got myself in debt buying it. And to be honest I don't think I could find another mixer currently that I would want to work with, even for my meager needs.

There are some great sample disks out there. For real sounding drum hits you have the bob clearmountain and Ross Garfield series. I also like various electronic sounds too. I think the trick to getting a good (sample) drum sound is layering. Don't just use one kick use a couple of them, it's easy to sculpt a sound that way. I'm not an expert on the subject just what works for me.

For me Acid works perfectly because of it's editing features. It's just so easy to use. Plus I like working with wave files. Is Cubase MIDI based? I can preview sounds, change the tempo, I just don't think there is a better editor available.

Another thing... It's easy to laydown scratch tracks and flesh out the basics for the song. When I'm done I can export each drum sound indivually into Sonar where I'll do all my real tracking.

Yup, the drum editor in Cubase is midi based. I think I understand now. You arrange your drum samples a series of wavs. I assumed you were using midi into a VSTi.

Terrific songs by the way. The songs themselves and the mixes behind them.
