Moving cards to Magma

I have four UAD-1 cards installed in my DAW, and they have been working flawlessly. I am considering moving them into a Magma expansion chassis so as to accomadate installing some Lynx AES16 cards in my DAW. ( The Lynx cards don't seem to want to live in the Magma ). I know people have had success with UAD cards installed in an expansion chassis. My question is will I have to re-install the drivers for the UADcards once they are relocated, or will they be automatically recognised? Should they work just by moving them, or will I have to worry about possibly dealing with re-install/recognition issues? :?

No need to re-install drivers.

Sound cards have to go in the computer.

Watch out for IRQ issues.

I have my 4xUad-1 cards and my Lynx 2 cards in my magma chassis. No problems at all. Though DH is right. You have to watch out for thos IRQ sharing potential problems.

Not true.

My RME MADI card sits happily in the Magma chassis.

And I know many people who do the same.

Ask Grado on the Nuendo forum. He built many systems like that.

I even ProTools can have all their cards in the chassis why can't you?

Thanks for the replies. I could not get the Lynx Cards to take up house in the Magma chassis. When I moved them into my PC, they installed immediately, and they are working as they should. I was able to set them up within Cubase SX2, and ran through a previously finished project, which indicated everything is fine. I moved my four UAD-1 cards to the Magma, and when I powered up, the computer told me it found new hardware ( the four cards ) , so I ran through the driver install, and all seemed to go smoothly. However, card three did not take. The computer tells me \"Card 3 is not available - unknown error\". When I checked in the control panel, I found that the other three cards ( 1, 2 & 4 ) are installed correctly, but \"unable to install ( card 3 ) due to lack of resources\" shows up. This confuses me, as they were all working before. Also, in checking status with the UAD Meter, the Meter verifies that card 3 is unavailable. And, worse yet, none of my authorizations are available. This window popped up: \"Card 1 - Authorization chip is corrupted. It will be repaired, but you will not be able to run any timed demos. Please contact Customer Support\" . Same window popped up for card 2 & card 4. Can this be fixed online, or do I have to send the cards in for service? Bummer  :( :?

what I would do:
- uninstall all UAD software (check if manually somethings left in the vstpluginsfolder etc...
- switch off DAW+magma, wait a minute, unplug powercords...
- unplug all UADs in magma
- plug in cords, powerup, check if all is ok. (yes I am paranoid sometimes)
- so clean install 4.2, power off DAW(unplug etc)
- put in ONE UAD-1 card
- boot... etc do this for each card manually. maybe card3 only has a \"bad seat\". or try different slot.
- then APPLY the .reg file you have from the myaudio at uawebsite for the authorisations. if still probs, you have to contact UA support. should go via email.

Good Luck!

Well, I must admit I am a bit surprised by the responses re: soundcards in the Magma, and a bit embarrassed!

I was told directly by the great folks at Lynx *not* to put my AES-16 card in the Magma, and also in one of the UA trouble shooting guides it says the same thing.

I have been known to be wrong before, so I apologize to the original poster and anyone else I may have misled with my bad info.

DH, you were spot on with regards to the Lynx cards in my Magma, as you can read in my posts above. I did not see anything on the Lynx site warning against install in an expansion chassis, but my attempts to do so proved you right, at least with regards to the AES16. Now, I need to get my UAD cards back working... :(

No DH. You are kind of right. This has been a known issue for some people. IFor me and a few others it works perfectly. I think this is a PC mobo compatability issue. Not so much it's compatibility with the Lynx cards but that with the Magma.

That's the pain with PC's - it's so hit and miss.

I think not putting them in a magma is sound advice my friend. It's just that it will work for some and not others.

This could also be a windows issue. Are you using the 3gb switch in boot ini?
If yes you need to ad a userva line, see my sign.
Put simply, all devices need an amount of reserved memory, and with the magma added you have run out. Windows needs to be told to reserve more. If you don´t use the 3gb switch I´m not exactly sure what to put in boot ini but problably something like userva=1800, but check first.

.mr chris , you were correct on this issue. Apparantly my problem was caused by installing all of the cards in the Magma at once, This confused the OS, even though the \"New Hardware Install Wizard\" recognised all of the cards and offered to install each one individually. I think the computer thought that there were now eight cards installed, instead of the max four, and it didn't know which were valid and which were not, so it simply refused to cooperate. The Manual from MAGMA implies that one must simply transfer any cards into the expansion chassis, turn it on and go play. They should caution there about installing only one at a time. So, I had to go to Device Manager and uninstall all instances of cards and drivers for the Universal Audio components, then, as mr chris suggested, install one card at a time. When I did this, everything installed correctly, and is running ( and authorised ) as it should. Thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions. :D
